Coach of the Year As part of a new feature in the Compendium, we are proud to select Mr. C. J. Howard as our coach of the year for 1981-82. Although several coaches and teams had outstanding seasons, Coach Howard’s varsity basketball team provided S.T. fans with entertainment, excitement, and surprising success. Given a group of players averaging just over six feet tall and lacking a superstar to depend on in crucial situations, Mr. Howard utilized to their fullest the special skills of each individual and guided the team into the C.C.S. play-offs in defiance of the laws of probability. And it was crowd-pleasing basketball all the way. Some of it was attributable to luck, and a great portion to his knowledge and experience as a coach and a former collegiate player. But the special ingredient, according to every last member of the team, is the man’s dedication, temperament and positive regard for the dignity of his players, which they absorbed, instilled in each other, and exuded on the court in competition. Mathematically, it resulted in a winning season, but the numbers do not tell the story of the respect and admiration that he personally won from his team. If you want that, you have to play basketball for C. J. Howard. Coach of the Year 133

Stars Jeff Reed — Senior Football Randy Prescott — Senior Soccer Debbie Spina — Sophomore Soccer Henery Strothers — Senior Basketball Carrie Valdivia — Junior Soccer Debbie Von Ruden — Junior Swimming Eric Weiss — Senior Water Polo, Swimming Lis s Ice Lisa Ice’s athletic accomplishments at Santa Teresa High School have put her in a special category. She has lettered 3 years in volleyball, 4 years in softball and 4 in basketball. In addition, she made first team all-league 3 times in volleyball and basketball. Her string of records and achievements in basketball suggest that she was the most dominating player in the C.C.S. She scored a total of 1745 points in her four year career, scored in double figures 77 games in a row, set a school record of 42 points in one game and was twice selected all-C.C.S. In addition, she has a strong chance of being chosen as a high-school All- American. Santa Teresa is proud of her and wishes her great success in the future. All Stars 135
