Distinguished Students Named VIRGINIA ESCALANTE Girls' Stater Virginia Escalante's corn- ments on Girls' State were, We gained a wider knowl- edge of our government, we gained a greater feeling of patriotismg we gained the friendship of over 200 girls, and we gained weight! Frank Awbrey gave his views on Boys' State: Boys' State gives a person a sense of independence and author- ity. It instills citizenship and. initiative and gives a basic concept of our working gov- ernment. Santa Cruz representatives to Girls' State held last June I2-I8 at the University of Arizona at Tucson were sponsored by the Eloy Busi- ness and Professional Wom- en's Club. LUPE ROSALES Alternate STEVE SIMPSON Alternate Boys' Staters were spon- sored by the Lions Club and the Eagles. Boys State was held in Flagstaff on the Northern University of Ari- zona campus, June il-I7. OLGA JAQUEZ Girls' Stater Olga Jaquez related that At Girls' State one under- stands the workings of our democratic government and realizes the numerous re- sponsibilities one must as- sume as an adult. Jim I-luie felt that 'Boys' State was an exhilarating experience in the processes and function of democracy.
