George Haines Honore Panther Swimmers Bring National Glory To Campus George Haines, teacher and swim coach at Santa Clara High School for more than sixteen years, was named the Champion of Champions at the third annual Santa Clara Valley Banquet of Champions, held in San jose the first week of February, 1969. Prior to that, at a banquet honoring the Santa Clara Swim Club and its Olympic swimmers early in December, Haines was honored as 'ithe Best in the Wforldu. Santa Clara High School alumni and student swimmers, including such nationally recognized greats as Claudia Kolb, Pokey Watson, Mark Spitz, Mitch Ivey and Brian job, still a senior, almost won the Olympic Menis and WVomen,s Swim Titles for the United Stetes on their own. Photos taken at Chamber of Commerce dinner honoring Haines and the Olympic swimmers show Haines receiving a set of golf clubs from C of C president VVarren Riordan as the main speaker of the evening, XVheaties, great Rev. Bob Richards, works on his notes. Haines holds an armful of plaques he was given while the table of Olympic swimmers, dotted with SCH'ers, is below. To the right, Claudia Kolk lauds Haines from the mike', and the Coach of the Wforld forgets his glory to bawl out a swimmer and to award senior water poloist Phil Vogt, the outstanding player award at the fall sports banquet. 6

It is with great pride and appreciation that the 1969 Tocsin is dedicated to a truly dynamic teacher, Mr. Duane Carton. Mr. Carton, who is best known as the SCH music department, has been on the teaching staff for 13 years. In these years he has directed and produced a number of musicals and variety shows. He has made it his busi- ness to see that football halftime shows are filled with really enjoyable entertainment. In addition. he plays a major role in keeping school life interesting and entertaining for all with a wide variety of musical groups, ranging from the choir to the pep band. A music directors work is never finished Mr. Carton directs dance band at Mission Mall Fiesta Days celebration as one of his many extra serv- ices to the community.
