The 1968-69 school year was expected to be a time of trial with temporary and widely scattered structures providing little of the aesthetic beauty needed to mold an integrated campus. However, the future promises a not too far distant day when the Panthers will have a new home that will turn the step-children of today into the envy of the educational community. As the ground work for new administration, class- room, shop and gymnasium buildings gets under way it becomes possible to dream more accurately of the San- ta Clara High of the future and secretly regret the good fortune of the underclassmen who will one day bask in the glory of the Santa Clara High of tomorrow. The main entrance of the new Men's Gymnasium will provide a gateway to the home contests of Panther athletic teams of the future, H mt XXRX X 'ie X, - NX-Q Look Into The Future Brings Great Expectations For anta Clara High Picturesque courtyard will add touch of beauty to the planned buildings for Science and Home Economics. 3 S z Q -s 4 K . , . Mr. Carton, who is best known as the SCH music department, has been on the teaching staff for 13 years. In these years he has directed and produced a number of musicals and variety shows. He has made it his busi- ness to see that football halftime shows are filled with really enjoyable entertainment. In addition. he plays a major role in keeping school life interesting and entertaining for all with a wide variety of musical groups, ranging from the choir to the pep band. A music directors work is never finished Mr. Carton directs dance band at Mission Mall Fiesta Days celebration as one of his many extra serv- ices to the community. George Haines Honore Panther Swimmers Bring National Glory To Campus George Haines, teacher and swim coach at Santa Clara High School for more than sixteen years, was named the Champion of Champions at the third annual Santa Clara Valley Banquet of Champions, held in San jose the first week of February, 1969. Prior to that, at a banquet honoring the Santa Clara Swim Club and its Olympic swimmers early in December, Haines was honored as 'ithe Best in the Wforldu. Santa Clara High School alumni and student swimmers, including such nationally recognized greats as Claudia Kolb, Pokey Watson, Mark Spitz, Mitch Ivey and Brian job, still a senior, almost won the Olympic Menis and WVomen,s Swim Titles for the United Stetes on their own. Photos taken at Chamber of Commerce dinner honoring Haines and the Olympic swimmers show Haines receiving a set of golf clubs from C of C president VVarren Riordan as the main speaker of the evening, XVheaties, great Rev. Bob Richards, works on his notes. Haines holds an armful of plaques he was given while the table of Olympic swimmers, dotted with SCH'ers, is below. To the right, Claudia Kolk lauds Haines from the mike', and the Coach of the Wforld forgets his glory to bawl out a swimmer and to award senior water poloist Phil Vogt, the outstanding player award at the fall sports banquet. 6 ' ' . - -LQ k ' fixaam.1f,v,w-a.fw....W I Q . 5 0- .- A -0- ,- -w ....-My 5 RESNA ' I 5, 1. Some are content to let the future take care of itself, A few, however, are already successful on a campus, city, state or national scale. Perhaps that best known Panther senior is swim star Brian Job who was a second place finisher in the Olympics at Mexico City last fall. Seniors Leap F Other Panthers already leaping up the glory road are Miss Santa Clara, Vicki Briganti, and track star Harry Freeman, fourth in the nation as a junior in the Triple jump. Student body president Mike Asch kept the frosh spellbound last fall while senior center Doug Clayton proved a success in leaping for the ball, if not the moon, during the cage season. W V. Not really. . . .only to the WVilson- ettes. YVe were in high school at last and were brusting with pride. It certainly was a thrill. Every freshman must pay the consequences. and our little voices were heard all over the campus: WVhe re is room 5PM 'iHow long do we have for lunch? Can we really leave the campus? The Freshman Reception was a nervous night for us all. Our first high school dance ..... wow! As we enter- ed the door. we were given baby-bottle shaped name- tags, so the older students could tell who the baby freshman were. As if they couldn't tell by the curious expressions on our faces. We left the dance with much pride thanks to Francine Moosg she had won the dance contest. Our first victory? Football season came and so did our cries of: YVe began to feel like a part of the school. NVith every new sports season our spirit grew. ' '66 was a very good year. Y'Ve had experienced so much. To top off the year, we attended our first Nom- ination Convention. 'iWhat's it all about? None of us really knew, but we soon found out. Finally came our first Tocsins. The Tocsin Dance was great and so was the last day of school. YVe had learned many things our first year. but we could not figure out how to cut aclass The Steps Toward Come September and we were back .... this time showing the freshman around. WVe were more ac- quainted with the teachers, and we could even joke around with a few of them. VVe were smart enough to change our bad classes at the begining of the year, in- stead of suffering through a whole semester with a dis- agreeable subject. Everything was going great until the latest rumor came true. Our beautiful school was to be torn down. Our student body was transferred to Buchser's campus. The split session went over pretty good, considering Buchser was our biggest rival. During Buchser week, we were all warned not to tear down any of Buchser's decorations in the halls, but never the less, they came down. Buehseris pride came falling down when we beat them in the big game. and get away with it. 65-66 Class Officers: President - Mike Asch, Vice President - Don Peterson, Sec.-Treas. - Chrisjohnson ..... I 'N I 66-67 Class Officers: President - Don Peterson, Vice President - Chrislohnson, Sec.-Treas. - Vickie Bacon On our return to our campus, we were greeted with. portables and promises of a beautiful new school with- in a' year. It got pretty hectic between classe The at- tendance office hit an all time high with tardy slips. We had a carnival that was just great. Between john D,Ambrosio's pizza stand and DJ. Pifferetti's flower stand, our class ran the carnival. Soon again it was exam time only to followed by a wonderful summer. WVe left happily knowing we were to return as upper cla ssmen. Graduation 67-68 Class Officers: President - jim Pruitt, Vice President- Tony Rumore, Sec.-Treas. - Barb Peterson When returning to school there was a sigh of dis- appointment. YVe all expected some new construction of our school, but all we got was a hole in the ground. This did not stop us from having our ugood old S.C. high spirit. We knew we had to stick together, and we did. Being an upper classman was a new experience and we loved it. Taking a more serious attitude about high school, we realized we had better start saving for ourjr. Prom. We had a car wash, which was a success. Then the date was set, March 23, and a name was given, The Splendor Of Athens. Our Ir. Prom was beautiful. Our chosen king was Mike Barcells, and our Queen was lovely, Vicki Briganti. Being 16 or over, we all had are drivers license. Some of us even had our own cars. It was a wonderful feeling to drive your own car to school. We were getting wiser in allways. Many of us tried to cut school occasionally, and many of us got caught. We still didn't know how to play hooky, but we did know how to talk our English teacher into prolonging a test. Before we knew it the seniors were practicing their graduation exercises, and we were signing year- books. 68-69 Class Representatives: President - jim Karas, Steve Doyle, Bill Harris. Tony Rumore, David Yniguez Are we really seniors? upper-upper? the superior class? It was glorious to become a senior. lVe all knew this was going to be our most hectic year. I suppose we all built up a better relationship with Mr. Kulesa. His advice was very valuable to us. Senior superlatives were passed out and voted on. Directly after that came senior picture time. Many did not recieve their pictures until March. Then came time to order graduation announcements. VVhen Christmas vacation came around we all gleam ed with joy knowing the senior snow trip was coming soon. Well, the snow trip was an absolute success. Our only wish was to have all our class gatherings become such a success. Between studying and college exams, we felt our social life growing. Soon came the Senior Social .,.. playing pool, dancing, and just fooling around. After the social many of us split to PANTHER beach. It was great!! The Senior picnic was welcomed by everyone. A whole day of loafing. Two weeks before graduation came our Senior Ball. It came off with a bang even though in the back of our minds we knew we still had examines and many other events to experience before june 13th. It all went by so fast. June l3th was here be- fore we knew it. WVe had our diplomas and a hanky full of tears. All that was left was words in our hearts that we could not express.
