MIDDLE ROW: Jack Burdullis, George Guerrero, John The 1958 Saints, enjoying the best season in the history of the school, breezed through the T.V. League and then went all the way to the semi-finals of the C.l.F. Northern Division Play-offs. With practically the entire first team returning from the previous year, the rugged Saints were pre-season favorites to win the league. After disposing of Camarillo in their opener, S.C. went on to victory over Carpinteria High School, a team which the Saints had never before been able to beat. Next, St. John Vianney, stiff competitors of the rough Parochial League, fell before the confident Saints. Said Coach Machado concerning the game, This is the first time a Santa Clara team has fallen behind and still maintained a desire to win. BOTTOM ROW KNEELINGQ Alvino Bargas, Bill Varela, Tim Ryan, Charles Fulmer, Phil Reagan, Nick Esca milla, Luis Garcia, Ralph Bovy, Richard Palomino, Walter Travers Mike Sharp, manager. The Saints proved unbeatable with opening of league competition. What made them that way? Two factors, tl! desire, and C25 the coaching of John Machado and Lou Cviianovich, who not only stressed football but also demanded high morals, sportsmanship, good study habits, and gentlemanliness. Going into C.l.F. competition, the Saints fought off a fine San Luis Obispo Mission team for a hard-earned 20-14 victory but lost to a powerful eleven from Needles. Seven players from the '58 squad obtained all-league honors and two, Nico Escamilla and Mark Pinedo, were named to the all-C.l.F. team.
