B Student Court Practices and One of the basic principles of a democratic system is that the guilt or innocense of an ac- cused person should be determined by a body of his peers. The function of Santa Barbara High School's Student Court was to hear the cases and to provide a fair trial for those students who had in some way violated school regula- tions. Through this democratic system students were not only provided a trial by their equals, but they were educated in court procedures. Chief Justice Janis Brock presided over the court and pronounced verdicts and sen- tences. The associate justices or jury decided the verdict and the Chief Justice voted only in the case of a tie. The office of Attorney Cen- eral was filled by Tim McMahon. His duty was to speak for the students of SBHS and uphold school laws. The Defense Attomey, whose office was filled by Chris Lem, was at the dis- posal of all students who desired counsel or defense of their case.
