PAGE 18 THE 1950 BASEBALL TEAM 1951 PREYIEW As the .DISTAFF goes to press, Coach Nunan, assisted by Warner Keaney is working hard with the baseball squad of 1951. Graduation last year left him with only four letter men, but he is not downhearted and each day sees him strug- gling to whip his squad into shape. There should be much interest in watching the season develop this year to see whether Coach Nunan is justified in his faith in them. The manager is Robert Pinkerton. The squad will probably include the following: Charles Caramihalis, Richard Baston, Richard Tebbetts, Richard Ther- iault, Norman Belanger, Charles Killam, Robert Watson, Richard Watson, James Willey, Thomas Belliveau, John Maher, Robert Dwight, Roland Merrifield, Alan Saperstein, Ronald Mathieu, Arnold Holland, Arthur Mathieu, Stanley Scieszka, Roger Stackpole, Maurice Lavertu, Gerard Noel, Richard Rand, Donald Davis, Charles Driscoll, and Herbert Stone. 1951 SCHEDULE Date Opponent Place . THE FRESHMEN Deering High was Sanford High's next victim, and it marked the first time Sanford and Deering had met on the gridiron in over twenty years. Coach Alvino had his squad really up for this one and in spite of a great exhibition by Deering's Jerry Simpson, Sanford pulled this one out by the score of 12 to 7. The two bands put on quite a show between the halves at Goodall Park. The Portsmouth Clippers, with a heavy veteran squad, were too powerful for Sanford's light but scrappy team. After putting up stiff resistance on a mudecov- ered field, the locals succumbed by the score of 20 to 6. The final game with our traditional rivals, Biddeford High, found Sanford reaching its peak... Sparked by All-Western Maine Charlie Caramihalis, the Redskins romped over the Tigers of Biddeford for the second straight year. The Sanford team put on one of the best forward passing exhibitions ever displayed in Sanford, simply demoralizing the scrappy, never-say-die Biddeford team. Prospects look brighter for next fall with twelve lettermen returning even though Coach Alvino will miss such men as Caramihalis, Durant and Mayo, who have been regulars for four years. About Captain Charlie Caramihalis Coach Alvino said: Charlie is one of the greatest offensive backs I have ever seen in high school football, so naturally he will be difiicult to replace. Coach Arnold had the freshman squad practicing early last fall. This is the first year the freshmen have had the advantage of special training in junior high school. The freshmen had several practice games with Emerson and Hamlin. Other than these games their season consisted of one win and two losses. St. Louis Fresh- men defeated them 20-0, Thornton Freshmen defeated them 21-0, and they won over the Spaulding Freshmen 42-6. This year's squad consisted of: Roger Demers, Robert Leblanc, Reginald Sheltra, Robert Ramsdell, William Morrow, Earl Adams, Alfred Petrin, Richard Tuttle, John Mullins, Wilbur Vachon, Edward' Gauthier, David Gardner, Robert Levesque, Armand Legere, Walter Ouellette, and Wayne Waterhouse, manager. From this nucleus will come the stars of the 1954 team, PAGE 17

Our varsity basketball team, un- der the leadership of Coach Keaney, was most elated to find itself the winner of the York County Bas- ketball Championship. The season ended with a tie between Sanford and St. Louis which necessitated a play-off at Biddeford. During the game the crowd was on the edge of its seats and only relaxed when the final whistle blew and Sanford had a one-point lead. The J-V's, under the leadership of Coach Arnold, were to be found playing practically as many games as the varsity team. While their record of 7 wins and 12 losses may not look so impressive, it is worthy of note that they handed the St. Ignatius J-V's two of the three de- feats they suffered. The freshmen, under the leader- ship of Coach Alvino, although there was too little opportunity to prac- tice, completed their season in the York County Freshmen League with 4 wins and 6 losses. We are proud to salute the boys who have donned basketball togs this year and worked hard to bring prestige to our school. Captain Lavertu Receives The York County Trophy PAGE 19
