I gr ,fy ,, '71 l , r ,I vig, I km I fx X Z Q new af,,, The Sanders Pirates went through a twenty four game schedule Cincluding tournament games! with only eight wins to their credit, but of the games lost, four of them were lost by a total of only nine points Four of the others were lost by margins of less than seven points As the season progressed and the players acquired the much needed experience the Pirates became an improved team and they were always fighting until the final whistle They finished regular season play by holding the highly favored Cathedral Panthers of Gallup to a three point victory This win gave the Panthers a 17 won and l lost record and gave us a 39 point average per game during season play The next week the team went to the Northern Arizona Tournament at Flagstaff where they opened the festivities in the new college gym by playing Fredonia For the third consecutive year determine the sixteenth team and again, as in the two previous years, the Pirates won by downing the Kaibab Kubs 59 H7 The next day they played the Seligman Antelopes and nearly upset the dope bucket We led from the second quarter on only to lose in the waning moments of the game 55 53 The following day they bounced back to defeat the favored St Johns Redskins 51 45 This win paired them against Ash Fork to determine one of the finalists for the consolation chanpionshlp The Spartans proved to have too much for us and beat us 59 6 and then they went on to win the finals We averaged 52 points a game at the tournament The captain of the Pirates, Max Ortega, led the team through the season He averaged sixteen points a game and received honorable mention for the All Northern team picked at the tournament He will be lost to next year's team as will Art and Frank Beasley but added strength is hoped for from the returning lettermen Ray Chavez, Aggie Ortega, Sam Barker, Clark Richins, Ben Lynch, Louie Morgan and Charles Grimes Also expected to help the team are several boys from the reserves Missing from the Varsity and Lettermen's pictures is Louis Morgan, who was one of the starters the last half of the season Louie was in the hospital at the time the pictures were taken sa S F5 df . 4 a K I 1 -15 Sanders and Fredonia had to nplay offn in order to
