STU E TCOUNCIL Now The spoTlighT Talls on your STudenT Council. This body, Tormerly known as Ex-Board, worked hard and eTTicienTly during The year. IT prompTly swung inTo moTion in The Tall under The leadership oT STudenT Body PresidenT Bill Odom. STudenT Council is a com- binaTion OT The execuTive and legislaTive parTs oT The sTudenT governmenT. The sTudenT body oTTicers com- prise The execuTive parT. Their commissioners and an elecTed represenTaTive Trom each home room con- sTiTuTe The legislaTive branch. This body meT weekly and discussed sTudenT problems and proposed acTiv- iTies ThaT concerned The sTudenT body. One oT The TirsT big iTems on The Tall agenda was The proposed sTudenT lounge. Bill Odom appoinTed Lanny Merrill as chairman oT a commiTTee To look inTo This. His commiTTee laid valuable groundwork which should prove helpTul To The goal oT geTTing The lounge compleTed nexT year. Tied in wiTh The lounge problem was The annual P.T.A. membership drive. STudenT Body AudiTor Harvey Zall and The sTudenTs working wiTh him in conjuncTion wiTh The P.T.A. made arrangemenTs wiTh The parenTs and Teachers ThaT iT, Through campaign- ing on The parT oT The sTudenTs, IOOO members could be acquired, The P.T.A. would conTribuTe 513200 To The lounge Tund. The quoTa was reached, The money was acquired, and This was anoTher big sTep Torward. Special Thanks should be given To Lanny and Harvey and all The oTher sTudenTs who devoTed so much Time To This projecT. The Rally Commission, in cooperaTion wiTh The Tine sTaTT oT cheerleaders, arranged several good rallies during The TooTball season. These were highlighTed by The one preceding The LiTTle Big Game wiTh Bur- lingame. Al Talley oT CaliTornia TooTball Tame spoke To The sTudenTs and Three greaT guys named Mc- Guire, Dunn, and SmiTh broughT down The house wiTh a hilarious skiT. jSee page 78.j Our TooTball queen, Bev James, and her princesses were crowned and The TooTball Team was honored. Also held in conjuncTion wiTh The Rally Commission was The annual Color Week in which anyone caughT wearing red had To pay The consequences. The noon inTramural program was again run oTT wiTh greaT success by The RecreaTion Commission. Leagues were Torrned in boTh TooTball and baskeTball and sTiTT compeTiTion was aTTorded boys who were noT ouT Tor school sporTs. A ping-pong TournamenT was also held. ln The spring, boTh boys and girls were able To compeTe in a very successTul mixed doubles badminTon TournamenT. ln February, Lanny Merrill was elecTed To succeed Odom as A.S.B. prexy. Lanny quickly puT his machine inTo high gear and no Time was losT because oT The TransiTion Trom one adminisTraTion To The oTher. One oT The TeaTure projecTs oT The spring semesTer was The all-school carnival. Odom had appoinTed Rosalie Hays as chairman oT The carnival commiTTee during The Tall and she and her aides sTarTed work early. This commiTTee Turned in a good job and a very successTul carnival was enjoyed by record crowds. The sTudenT body Treasury was bolsTered greaTly by The Tunds Trom This evenT. IT was TeaTured by booThs run by The various clubs and oTher organizaTions and special TeaTures included a barker, a queen, and a dance. Also making big news during This Time was The work oT The P.T.A. Toward having a celebraTion Tor seniors and Their guesTs on graduaTion nighT. This was someThing new and was meT wiTh greaT Tavor by parenTs and sTudenTs alike. N'egoTiaTions were made Tor a big-name band and The local counTry club. IT was hoped ThaT This would become a big annual evenT in The TuTure oT San MaTeo High. The ConsTiTuTion CommiTTee, under The direcTion oT Harvey Zall, did good work during The year. One imporTanT change was a new make-up oT The school Tinance commiTTee. IT called Tor The elecTion oT Two members oT each class To serve on The Tinance com- miTTee and To remain on The commiTTee unTil grad- uaTion. ln This way There would always be experienced members available To handle The imporTanT Tinancial problems oT The school. These members would be in addiTion To The presenT members oT The commiTTee. Many Tine assemblies were enjoyed during The year. These were TeaTured by The jazz concerT puT on by The junior college dance band. The Dance Commission deserves much crediT Tor iTs work during boTh semesTers. The aTTer-game dances meT wiTh unusual success and all The big dances were greaTly enjoyed by all in aTTendance. The ArT Commission did a Tine job OT adverTising school TuncTions Through posTers and banners Through- ouT The The enTire year. Our show case in The lobby always had a display oT some deparTmenT OT The school, ranging Trom work done in The shops To a display adverTising Elm sales. Yes, iT was a good year Tor The STudenT Council and boTh presidenTs and Their adminisTraTions should be congraTulaTed Tor a job well done.
