One of the frightenest San Mateo varsity foot- ball squads in this school's 25 year history, the 1948 Bearcats, under Head Coach Wag Iorgen- sen, and his assistants, Bay Allee, Walt Selover, and Frank McGraw, finished the season in a third place tie with Lincoln, each club register- ing four wins, two defeats, and one tie. The 'Cats had a most eventful practice season as the varsity whipped Fremont, 12-O, and Oak- land Tech, 21-6, while the junior varsity slashed Oakland Tech, 13-7, Serra, l3-7, and Commerce, 24-13. Fullback Bill Botieff crashed over with San Mateo's first P.A.L. touchdown in the opening game with Sequoia, and Sal Campagna, all- P.A.L. back, plunged over with the winning TD as the Cherokees fell 13-7. The Mateans made it two in a row as they trounced San lose 20-6 the following week. Bob Cummings tossed to Bill McMichael, Campagna passed to Cameron Van Wye, and Botieff plowed from the one-foot line for the three Mateo touchdowns. After two weeks of disaster, which found Palo Alto and Lincoln handing San Mateo its only two setbacks of the year, by respective scores of 27-l2 and 26-7, our boys hit the comeback Jn Mad trail as they bopped lefferson lO-9, as Campagna passed to Dick Bailey for one TD and ran over another, while Duane Eckert's aerial to all-P.A.L. End Bill Kahler was good for the third. An underdog 'Cat eleven upset mighty South City l8-6, with Campagna scoring twice and flipping to Kahler for point eighteen. The stage was set for the Little-Big Game. Needing a win to tie for the championship, San Mateo battled heavily-favored Burlingame to a 6-6 tie. Behind 6-O, San Mateo produced a 70-yard drive which was climaxed when Botieff smacked over from the one. The unsung heroes of the gridiron, the seven men in the Bearcat line, developed into one of the best forward walls in the league. Standouts in the line were Kahler, Bill McMichael, Dick Bailey, Don Sicard, Bay Christenson, Dick Mc- Clure, and Iohn Bland, who was picked as cen- ter on the second all-P.A.L. eleven. Bob Alcala, lim Geiger, Bon Olson, Bill Mills, and Phil Iaeger all saw a great deal of line action, also. Other backfield stalwarts, other than those who figured in the season's scoring, were Bill Haugeer, Pat DeSibio, Art Boling, and Wes Siegfried.

Jfwm - som gunman For the second consecutive year, Coach Frank Collins' Soph-Frosh was nosed out of a cham- pionship by a half game and again by Sequoia's Frosh. Collin's crew finished in second place with five wins, one tie and one loss. With Bing Crosby cheering for the opposition, San Mateo dropped its first and last practice game as Bellermine chalked up a 20-6 win. In the opening league game, the Bearkittens fought Sequoia to a 6-6 tie with Fullback Willie Grimes racing 80 yards for the lone Matean touchdown. The 'Kittens went on to bop San lose, 21-6, and then toppled Palo Alto from the unbeaten ranks with a 14-0 dumping on the local gridiron. Lincoln's Frosh registered San Mateo's first league defeat as the Lincs blanked the Mateans, 14-0. On the next Thursday, Iefferson met San Mateo in what eventually seemed like a track meet, with San Mateo coming out on top, 40-20. Forty and 60-yard runs were numerous through- out the day. San Mateo tacked on its fourth league victory when the 'Kittens traveled to South City to smack the northerners, 32-12, in a contest highlighted by a pass from Dick Marble to Willie Wright, which, coupled with Wright's run, was good for 70 yards and a TD. ln a hard fought prelude to the Litttle Big game, San Mateo overcame stubborn Burlingame for a l3-l2 final score and the Mateans' fifth con- quest. Grimes scored all l3 San Mateo points. Grimes was by far the standout for the Mateo Frosh. Marble, Frank Rongey and Dan Aguilar were others who sparked the backfield attack. End Willie Wright turned in the most consistent line play for Coach Collins and his assistant, George Kristovich. Standouts in the middle of the line were Walt Anderson, Ed Baldini, Clark Rogelsted, Tom Tognoli, and Bob Whitmer. Ray Zieroff turned in good efforts at the other end post. FIRST ROW, left to right: Robertson, Mcllrath. Tateosian, Wells, High, Hogg, Rongey, Long, Van Wye. SECOND ROW: Daniels, manager: Toqnoli, Marble, Medrano, Morrison, Rueland, Iones, Scott, Moroni. THIRD ROW: Coach Frank Collin, Baldini, Rogelstad, Anderson, Grimes, Roberts, Ryal, Haight, Stellinq, Manager Matson, Coach Kristovich. FOURTH ROW: Weston, Moroni, Zieroff, Wright, Wyant, Dougherty, Soholt, Whitner. Black, Marquis, Manager Welch.
