Mr. George Wihr C Ja, ' During this past year, the members ot Hi-Staff, under the supervision of Miss Ieanette Weber, continued to publish the bi-monthly newspaper ot the Asso- ciated Students of San Mateo High School. The is organized on the same basis as a professional newspaper with regular beats assigned to the reporters and deadlines established prior to each publication. The page editors make-up the page dummies, write the heads, and then submit the copy to Mr. George Wihr, print shop instructor. He and his shop classes handle the technical side of publishing the four-page paper. Many students of journalism also work with the publicity commission by writing columns of school news and special articles for the city papers. Seven members oi the staff became members of Quill and Scroll, the lnter- national Honorary Society of High School Iournalists, last semester.

jim frm. A yearbook is, in all reality, a memory book. Sometime in the future as you take your '49 Elm from the shelf, blow the dust from its cover, and turn the pages, your thoughts will return to the time when you were a student at San Mateo High School. As you open the book, you will see pictures of the school building, so strange to a freshman and so familiar to the upperclassman. The pictures of the faculty will remind you of the many times those same teachers gave you extra advice and guidance. The familiar faces of the student body officers will call to mind election campaigns, assem- blies, and meetings of Ex-board, A.G.S. and A.B.S. representatives. The sports section will bring back the many times you either participated in a sport on a Bearcat team, or cheered for that team from the stands. lt will also recall rallies, the cheer- leaders, and the school song, Orange and Black. The social candids will bring nostalgic mem-- ories of the many times you planned, decorated, and then attended school dances and other events with your best date, The pictures of the oranizationse.-Band, Glee. C.S.F., lunior Statesmen, Footlighters, Hi-Staffe will remind you of the fun you had planning activities with these various groups. Then . . . the senior section. As you look at the faces of your friends, you remember them, their mannerisms, their nicknames, and most of all, the good times you had with them, both in and out of school. All this and much more is brought to you by your yearbook, the Elm. lt is a key to your memories and is a treasured possession of all alumni. ,.--.:':-,.......- BETTY HOWAT Editor ,,.-vr '- MM STAFF FIRST right: Wallace.
