They lso the Paso Robles Bearcats, but lost a thriller to Arroyo Grande one ' ed Saturday afternoon by a heart-breaking I4-'l3. Recovering, the Tigers p d the Atascadero Greyhounds by a record score of 65-0. The Tigers ac- plished what no other team in the San Luis Obispo Athletic League had been le to do this year-they defeated the Ventura Cougers of the Channel League. X Although the records showed a three-way tie, the Tigers were voted out of the C. I. F. play off by the principals of the schools of our league, but many observers felt that the Tigers were the rightful champions. 'X The Tigers were led by All-Conference halfback, Art Hoover, who zig-zagged his way through the opposing lines, and was able to better Fred Avery's previous rushing record of 1031 yards by 'I064 yards with an average of a little more than ten yards per carry. . ,D Guided by the coaching of Jack Tuttle, and the direct supervision of line coach, Glenn Dollahon, the Tigers battled their way to a glorious victory, and gave our school a team which makes us truly proud. Under the skilful direction of Mr. Richard Yeo, the players moved through Our Town with almost professional sure-footedness. Written by Thornton Wilder, Our Town offers a message in the form of a question. Why is it that the living never appreciate and understand the magnificent experience of being alive? The message is presented through Mr. Wilder's artistic capacity to reveal to the audience the souls of his characters. He makes them seem to be old neighbors or good friends, human beings full of life and vitality. The cast is to be congratulated on the fine proiection of the play's many characters. Sandra Stookey was extremely successful in portraying Emily as she passed through three distinct stages: a young girl filled with starry- eyed ambition, a young woman in love, and a mother feeling the strange and ominous calm of the after-life. Richard Abel, as the stage manager, was so apt in creating his illusion of reality that he seemed to be a middle aged resident of Grover's Corners, the scene of the play. Preston Pierce, Sharon Pennington, Mary Campbell, Martin Gross- hauser, Susan Cole, and Valerie Newlancler brought life to their parts and are equally deserving of commendation. Our Town was filled with memorable moments. Especially touch- ing was the scene in which Emily and George spoke to each other in the moonlight as the soft strains of the practicing church choir drifted out across the town. The scene carrying the most impact came when Emily, discontented in her grave, was permitted to return to the living and one day in her life at Grover's Corners. lt is with this scene that Mr, Wilder brings his message to the audience. The small day by day experiences, the things we take so much for granted make life rich and full, Many laughs . . . many tears . . . resounding applause . . . a fine tribute for o iob well done. lt mr, . The play centered on Ginger, the 14 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Carol. As a strong believer in the equality of the sexes, Ginger caused a stir in the Carol house- hold by insisting on competing against boys in athletics. When she beat Eddie Davis, her sis- ter Joan's boy friend and a much honored ath- lete, in a foot race, Ginger made her sisters even more indignant. The real bombshell came, how- ever, when she tried out for the high school football team and made the second string. Her sisters, Joan and Jeanne, and the other iunior and senior girls decided to boycott all the football games. Nevertheless, Lizzie, the Carol's maid, and Mr. Carol attended every game and practice. The play was well received by a large audience each night. Helping to make the play a success were the members of the technical crews under the direction of the following chairmen: Fred Schack, sets and lights, Keiko Iwao, costumes and make-up, Sue Bromley, props. Joyce Benson ably assisted as rehearsal secretary. Student chair- men were Earlene Boyce and Linda Lindwall. f x 1 p TQ, KN' iii ff T5 Q.
