THANKS...FOR A JOB WELL DONE In December PresidenT John T. WahlquisT announced ThaT he will reTire as presidenT of The College on SepTember 10, 1964, his 65Th birThday. AT The requesT of The California STaTe Colleges, he will remain on campus as PresidenT EmeriTus, ConsulTanT To The Chancellor, and Professor of EducaTion. Dr. WahlquisT became presidenT of San Jose STaTe College in 1952, and his adminisTraTion has seen The College enioy iTs greaTesT period of growTh. In 1952 SJSC had an enroll- menT of 6,480. Today enrollmenT has Tripled To more Than 19,450 sTUdenTs. When ExTension, Summer Sessions and new spring semesTer sTudenTs are added, iT is found T'haT The College is serving more Than 30,000 individuals an- nually. During his adminisTraTion, Dr. WahlquisT has emphasized high sTandards of scholarship and excellence in educaTion, Thereby raising The academic rank of The College. The Grad- uaTe Division now enrolls more Than 3,000 sTudenTs. The humaniTies program was launched in 1957, and a research program was sTarTeal in The same year. A ToTal of 18 schol- asTic honor socieTies have been esTablishecl since he became presidenT. PresidenT WahlquisT's adminisTraTion has seen The celebra- Tion of The cenTennial of The College in 1957. This has been followed by an annual Founder's Day convocaTion. The fine arTs have been encouraged Through spring and summer FesTivals of ArTs. Dr. WahlquisT is known also as a boosTer of aThleTics and has been honored for his supporT of Army and Air Force ROTC programs. The College faculTy has grown from year To year and now numbers more Than1,000. QualificaTions Tor TaculTy mem- bers have been raised. Finy-one per cenT of The TaculTy holds alocToraTe degrees, compared wiTh 40 per cenT 12 years ago. The area of The campus has doubled since 1952, and The value of buildings now exceeds TiTTy million dollars. The operaTional budgeT of The College in 1952-53 was $2,875,- 170. LasT year iT was $13,385,779. Through his wriTing and membership in naTional and sTaTe educaTional bodies, Dr. WahlquisT has become widely known in higher educaTion. Hisbook, Philosophy of Ameri- can EducaTion, has been adopTecl by 232 colleges and uni- versiTies. AnoTher, The AdminisTraTion of Public Education, has been adopTed by 121 colleges and universiTies. Dr. John T. WahlquisT FirsT day on campus, 1952 Dr. WahlquisT is The 17Th presidenT of The College. He came To California from The UniversiTy of UTah, where he had been dean of The College of EducaTion, professor of educa- Tion, and head of The DeparTmenT of EducaTional Adminis- TraTion.
