The Tower QLa Torrej symbolizes the spirit, the strength, and the unity of Spartaville. Standing straight and free, it expresses the spirit of the democracy which the College serves. It is strong with the strength of careful building on a firm foundation, so signifying the strength of the college life that is built on cultivation of the intellect and prepara- tion for vocational pursuits and citizenship. The Tower, too, expresses both figuratively and literally the unity of Spartaville through friendship. On its venerable walls are written the words of an early graduate, Edwin Markham: He drew a circle to shut me out Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win, We drew a circle that took him in. La Torre depicts the extra curricular activities. It is my be- lief that, in the main, the events here chronicled reflect the 10 true spirit of Spartaville. They portray a student body of fine young men and women engaged in worthy enterprises of their own creation. I doubt that the extra-curricular pro- gram of any other institution of higher learning is so nearly under the control of the students themselves. So long as the premium is placed upon wholesome activities, its future is assured. A casual inspection of the volume convinces me that, in the words of our College hymn: We pledge our hearts and hands To keep thy colors ever bright Forward we go! We will not fail! MW
