Twenty five years ago there came to the presidency of our college a gracious gentleman with carriage as erect and principles as unhending as The Tower in which he made his office. To his new joh this man hrought vision, leadership, courage-and a conviction that college should prepare young men and women to earn a living. He converted what was then a teachers college into an outstanding liheral arts institution, noted for the hreadth and excellence of its occupational instruction. The kind of education he pioneered here has heen established hy law as the pattern for all California State Colleges. Now his joh is done, and in August he retires. The San jose State College of 1952 is a monument to his achieve- ment,' nothing said here could add or detract. But La Torre of 1952 would like to make some small expression of its admiration and appreciation of this man who has meant so much and done so much here. And so, to Dr. Thomas W. MacQuarrie, our retiring president, this hook is affectionately dedicated. Thanks a lot, Dr. MacQuarrie, goodhye . . . and good luck! All I had to do was stand aside and cheer . . . Swan song? Well, hardly. I expect still to do some interesting things, might even surprise you. Anyway l have those twenty-tive years ot happy memories. Everyone has been l4ind about my retirement, but I can't, in all honesty, claim credit tor the astounding growth ot San Jose State College. With the increase in population ot California, it was inevitable. All I had to do was stand aside and cheer. While it is a bit ot a nuisance to have a divided campus, we are a people's college, and we must remain where the people are. Academic seclusion is not tor us. Still we have over a hundred acres now and that will be adequate tor our building program. We'lI need a tew busses, ot course. We have tour buildings in process at the present time - Music, Engineering, Speech and the Memorial Chapel. The State master plan calls tor nine more besides dormitories and a union. We'll get them all some day, and then we can talce care ot ten thousand students. That will just about meet the need ot this area, I should think, tor years to come. I am glad we are the oldest public college in the West--gives us something to brag about. San Jose State is a pioneer college, and still pioneering, still adapting its otterings to the needs ot the young men and women who honor us with their presence. It has been a great privilege to be here, an opportunity tar beyond my wildest dreams, a great experience and a happy one, I assure you. Calitornia owes me nothing: the protit is all mine. May the new man carry on with the same high satistaction. Twwm '
