presidenfs message: Not all of the people of California, in those Gold Rush days, were looking for gold. A good many were school teachers, several of them were men of courage, vision and high professional spirit. California was fortunate in its early school leadership. The Teachers' Institute of 1855 petitioned the Legis- lature to establish a normal school, but it was not until May, 1862, that the legislators finally got the idea, and appropriated three thousand dollars to start the venture. On July eighteenth the new school opened its doors in San Francisco with that famous student body of one gentleman and five ladies, the first public institution of higher education on the Coast. ln l87l, it was moved to San Jose and became the California State Normal School. ln 1921, it became a Teachers' College with authority to grant degrees, and in 1935, it became San .lose State College. 7za3Mr
dedication Karl S. llazeltine Karl Hazeltine was a moving force in the life of San ,lose State College. To faculty and stu- dents alike, he symbolized friendliness, the helping hand. He did his work well. ln athletics, the student health service, the establishment of financial aids for needy students, the encouragement of scholarship, and religious leadership, as well as in the classroom, he made his influence felt. For information, understanding, sympathy, or wise counsel, young and old turned to him in full con- fidence that their needs would be met. They were never disappointed. ll eorge Guy George was known for his cheery greeting, his unassuming manner and his outspoken faith in the American democratic way of life. He brought to his work complete honesty, a sym- pathetic understanding of students, and unquestioned teaching ability. With no pretense of su- periority he achieved superiority through simple earnestness and the dedication of his talents to the service of his fellowmen. He has left the College permanently enriched. Gay e ickwell The self-assurance of a strong leader, the insight of a philosopher, the winsomeness of a child, the devotion of a good parent, the warmth of a friend, and the humility of one who views himself in the clear light of truth-these qualities made of Gayle Pickwell a man never-to-be-forgotten by any who came within his magic circle. He accepted life's every challenge. His memory lives on, a tower of inspiration for all who lift their eyes to see.
