presidenfs message: Not all of the people of California, in those Gold Rush days, were looking for gold. A good many were school teachers, several of them were men of courage, vision and high professional spirit. California was fortunate in its early school leadership. The Teachers' Institute of 1855 petitioned the Legis- lature to establish a normal school, but it was not until May, 1862, that the legislators finally got the idea, and appropriated three thousand dollars to start the venture. On July eighteenth the new school opened its doors in San Francisco with that famous student body of one gentleman and five ladies, the first public institution of higher education on the Coast. ln l87l, it was moved to San Jose and became the California State Normal School. ln 1921, it became a Teachers' College with authority to grant degrees, and in 1935, it became San .lose State College. 7za3Mr
