ET ' I'S With the completion of this book, the La Torre passes another milestone and embarks upon a new era. For the first time in the history of San lose State College each student has received a Yearbook merely upon presentation of his Student Body Card. I-leretofore, there has been the claim that the La Torre was not representative of the entire school and that the benefit accrued to only a small portion of the Student Body. The publication of this issue marks the end of our year's effort to overcome this argument. It is our hope that it may herald the coming of greater things for the College and the Yearbook named after its justly famous tower. vs an New plans, new ideas, new efforts have all gone to make this 1936 Yearbook a true experiment. The La Torre staff was given a budget about half the size of those of the prosperity era with which to put out approximately three times as many books. Such drastic curtailment of the budget seemed like an insurmountable handicap, but the unfailing loy- alty oi the La Torre staff overcame it. For the first time La Torre became a regularly scheduled class with all staff members work- ing for credit, all mounting for the engraving layouts was done by staff artists: and a complete photographic studio was set up on the campus to facilitate the taking of pictures. ar as an av

N ' E All these radical innovations threw a great responsibility upon the staff, but they responded like veterans. This is in no way an apology for the book, but it is rather a tribute to all those students who were willing to give their time and energy to make the La Torre a truly all-school activity. an an La Torre has, for several years past been the orphan or the stepchild of the publication family. It has had to take a back seat for other journalistic efforts and has been rather a minus quantity in school affairs. With the appear- ance of the 1936 La Torre , however, it is our hope that a new day is dawn- ing for the book and that it may soon take its rightful place among the activi- ties of the College. It is our modest boast that in spite of drastic innovations and other handicaps to the contrary, we have brought forth a publication which is truly representative of the spirit of San Iose State. an an Of the work ofthe staff and their commercial assistants too much cannot be said. The printer, as always, gave unfailingly of his time, interest and suggestionsy the engraver labored long and endlessly in our behalf always cognizant of our special situation, and the photographer produced pictures the like of which La Torre has never been blessed with before. As for the staff, their unselfish service and excellent workmanship will long stand out as one of the greatest steps forward in the history of La Torre. Finally, the staff turns to you, the Student Body, as final judge. The Yearbook stands at the crossroads of its career: it is for you to decide what its future will be. an an an an an aa up
