PUBLISHED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE SAN JOSE STATE COLLEGE SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA FOREWORD l-x l OW that the last out has been completed and the last page has been printed, we of the editorial staff have served our purpose and have passed on. The 1935 LA TORRE has emerged as the result of our year-long eHort to produce something truly sym- bolic of San J ose State College and its activities. However, we have contributed the last iinishing touch, and now the book must stand on its own. To our way of thinking, the Yearbook serves a very definite purpose. It serves as a reminder of college days, happy days, if we only would realize it. It brings to mind old faces and friends, and presents a resume of the years highlights as nothing else ever could. Most important, the book aids in the making of friend- ships, and helps to create the bond of sentimentality between the graduate and his Alma Mater. This bond is particularly strong, and has a power that cannot be explained in so many words. Suf- fice it to say that hit is something which every college man and woman experience; something Which makes them want to stay, and yet forces them to leave that they may accomplish even greater undertakings in the brutal and practical world. Cognizant of the background and traditions of this college and realizing the tremendous possibilities for the future, the LA TORRE Staff has spared no effort to produce a representative publication. An attempt has been made to approximate as closely as possible the color and activity of the San J ose State College Year. If we have succeeded, then our reward will be your everlasting enjoy- ment of the book. The staH has worked long and hard, and Mr. Bentel has labored and has produced pictures which speak for themselves. We now submit the Yearbook for judgment and hope that it may be the source of fondest memories for years to come. DEDICATION To one who always has the interest of students at hearte-to one who is genial and yet determinedeto one who is always so ready and willing to give aid and advice+to the iiGodfatherii of the LA TORRE-to an officer and a gentleman, Mr. Neil C. Thomas, this 1935 LA TORRE is sincerely dedicated. INMEMORIAM Blessed be these departed who now have found ,3 their lives anew . . . MR. BARRY F. BERING GERTRUDE KETURI 33 EDWARD BOARDMAN GRACE LEPETICH 34 DR. BRUCE GEORGE .MARSHALL MESERVE MRS. DOROTHY S. HAMILTON DOROTHY MILLER 34 ,35 WALTER N ORRIS DIVISION ONE The H case of S pa ta FACULTY SENIORS UNDERGRADUATES ALUMN I So you bought a LA TORRE after all. I am sure youIll never regret it. I still have my old normal school annual of almost forty years ago. ItIs a little bit of a thing, possibly thirty pages, and a few pale ads. We paid $1 for it, and that almost ruined us, but Pm glad I have mine. In fact, litIs growing in interest. I look so solemn, tall, gangling. And there I stand, year in, year out, hair brushed smooth, three-inch stiE collar, black suit, dignity in every line. a a a a a a I haven,t seen any of my classmates for years, but in those pictures we,re forever young. Behind those blank, set faces are personalities, memories, jolly, care free, happy times. The depression of 93 was on, and that was a depression, but in our simple way we had a grand time. No money, you understand, n'o autos, 110 shows, 110 trips, a few very simple parties, just young people together. There is no better time, and you,ll realize that yourselves forty years from HOW. T. Noth- ing great was ever achieved with- out it? If I should attempt to express in one word my feelings for this years activities at State, that word could only be iienthusiasm? Cer- tainly the Associated Students have shown an abundance of en- thusiasm in making this one of the banner years in the long history of our college. Personally, I am very enthusiastic over the oppor- tunity that has been afforded me this year to serve with my fellow students, and to make many new friends. One of the best things that can be gleaned from these college years at State is the lasting friend- ships that may be formed here. If you have diHiculty in making friends or holding them, this little formula by Emerson is well nigh infallible, iiThe only way to have a friend is to be one? RONALD LINN. Above: J. D. Strauss and Everett McCartney Co-Winners of the Key Debate. Below: Mae Wilburn, Edwin Olmstead, Adrian Wilbur, Anne Isaksen. At the end of each school year, as a climax t0 the de- bating season, the annual Key Debate is held to determine the outstanding debater in San Jose State College. Six of the most prominent participants in forensic activities are chosen for the contest, and they are given a general topic on which to work. The morning of the debate the entries are given a special topic, and after dividing the subject into two opposing sides, they are given approxi- mately 12 hours to prepare their speeches. Prominent loCal people act as judges for the event, and the debater Who is adjudged the winner is presented with the debate key and has his name inscribed on .the permanent trophy. This year the debate ended in a tie. J. D. Strauss and Everett McCartney came out on top. Both of the win- ners are members of the Spartan Senate, as all partici- pants mustabe. They took an active part in the debate season and represented San Jose State at the Pi Kappa Adrian Wilbur, Delta Tournament at the College of the Pacific.
