Pruett. ln addition to his fine work in the history department, he has sponsored song and cheerleaders for several years. Under his supervision San Diego High School has produced an outstanding pep squad. Pepsters are also in- debted to Mr. Pruett for the spirit he has sparked. We are especially grateful for his thoughtful guidance and inspiration. In recognition of all his con- tributions to our school and student body, we of San Diego High School make this sincere dedication. H-Q, iisy 61 jg me XM. The activities offered on the Hill, all the clubs and organizations, friendships, services, and academic challenges, help prepare those who are about to step out into a broader life in the surrounding community-for activities on a much larger scale. San Diego High has offered to its graduating seniors experiences to remem- ber, and to its underclassmen, ones to look forward to. HOMECOMING ACTIVITIES 'It's a bird . . . It's a plane . . . It's . . . Hot Ho! Ho? Who put the sleeping pills in the Coke? Based on a nursery theme, floats were one of the highlights in this year's homecoming. Pre-game activities included entries by the Demoiselles and Key Club, Senior Cabinet, Junior Cabinet, and Sophomore Cabinet. The rousing spirit shown by the students and alumnae of San Diego High was led by the song and cheerleaders, while the floats and court rode by, led by the Benchwarmers, and the Sergeanettes performed skillful routines around the field. The culmination of the night's activities was the presentation of Queen Brenda Turner, Sen- ior Attendant Vickie Meza, Junior Attendant Lau- renne de Lannoy, and Sophomore Attendant Noreen Miranda. At the P.T.A. sponsored Homecoming dance, students danced to the music of the Innocents, All this added up to a most enioyable homecom- ing for the classes of 1916, 1926, 1941, 1956, and for the students of San Diego High School. 1 is fi. is E if Smile, you're on Candid Camera! All city schools that have R.O.T.C. units: San Diego, Hoover, Point Loma, Kearny, Madison, and Craw- ford, were represented. During the year the R.O.T.C. unit of each school elects a queen and two at- tendants from the student body. The queens and attendants are presented at this annual ball with the officers of their respective units for their escorts. San Diego's queen, Jinny Martinez, is shown being escorted through the ceremonial arch of sabers by Eugene Yee. After the presentation the traditional Queen's Waltz was played. The Ball is a joint effort each year. Two cadets from each school meet to form the Cadet Club Council that plans the Ball far in advance to insure an enjoyable evening. M 1 ,. v - n ,ga -. NEW PROGRAMS HARVARD PROJECT The Harvard Project is a new course in physics. Being experimental, there are only two schools in San Diego offer- ing the course. The course stresses ideas rather than technology. A , 1 wsxsaamammx COUNSELING The counseling proiect is also a new course. Its purpose is to stimulate the minds of the students by having open discussions on any subject. Fr This is the first year any San Diego high school has ever had class exchanges with other schools. The San Diego Association of Student Councils organized them to promote an understanding between schools by providing students with the opportunity to observe and take part in other schools' daily activities. By visiting other schools, false images are often broken, consequently the schools can get along much better. The different schools usually exchange early morn- ing American Government, history or English classes of a similar level. The students schedules are ex- changed on a one to one ratio of individual students, i.e., one student exchanges his schedule with another for one day. This year there have been three class exchanges. The first was with Kearny High, involving a l2th grade American Government class, the second with La Jolla involving an llth grade U.S. history class, and the third with Crawford exchanging A.S.B. classes. 52 ,?l'?f'Q4LlLyfff3' 1, f wwgwsf ,,'--,- ,, f SCHOOL EXCHANGE if Q l is Tx i fl IA IL lim.. 21 X 4' ,411 49.-f 7 CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS lwghgii 2'- 'W I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who made this year what it was. We have continued the recently started traditions of having Homecoming Floats and the Nominating Convention while add- ing after-game dances, a new A.S.B. Constitution, and a new election procedure. I would also like to give special thanks to those members of the A.S.B. Council who gave their time and efforts in starting and continuing the many traditions which we on the Hill have. Chin, M. Jones. Row 2: S. Weathers, T. Porter, M. Ritch, V. Oaks, J. Jones, J, Carton, M. Chin. ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY GOVERNMENT San Diego High's most active organization is its Associated Student Body. The A.S.B. is a government which consists of two organizations, the A.S.B. Council and the General Assembly, both of which are defined and regulated by the A.S.B. Con- stitution. As with all governments, the purpose of the Councifhandthe Assembly4s te promote and co-ordinate good student activities. Their purpose is also to be a classroom in leadership and responsibility, a place to learn by doing. Either body may initiate legislation, but, the other body must ratify that legislation before it is put into effect. This assures a balance of power by making each body equal in power. The main difference between the two is that the General Assembly handles sugges- tions and complaints by the students. ln this way its contact with the student body is closer than with the Council, while the Council attends to the everyday problems of the school and between schools. Each body performs in accordance with the way the members are chosen. By making a wise choice in the students running for office the student body is assured that the persons representing them will do a good iob by taking their positions ser- iously and with enthusiasm. The General Assembly handles broad, general problems, while the A.S.B. Council is more specialized. Together they function effectively as th A.S.B. Government of San Diego High School. ,f .f FALL . SPRING General Assembly is basically the median of communication be- tween the student body, A.S.B. Council, and the Administration. lt is generally very easy and ac- curate to find out how the whole student body would feel on a par- tiffular issue by bringing it up in General Assembly. General Assem- bly has always tried to promote all school activities such as dances, movies, plays, the Russ, sports, and the Annual. This year General Assembly representatives took part in the sale of friendship Bonds for the A.F.S. Club. Also, General Assembly, in conjunction with the the P.T.A., sponsored one of the two after-game dances held this year. Legislatively, General Assembly has veto power over any material passed in A.S.B. council, other than financial matters. This is rare- ly exercised, but serves as a check on the elected officers of A.S.B. Council by the popular opinion of the student body. Perhaps most important is that through G.A. any individual stu- dent can voice his or her com- plaint about any part of the stu- dent life. All legitimate complaints will be researched and the answer sought. In this way ony student may voice an opinion about any aspect of the student affairs at S.D.H.S. This year more than in preced- ing years, General Assembly rep- resentatives have shown an enthus- iasm and dedication which has vastly improved participation. GENERAL ASSEMBLY f f w. They have many worthwhile proiects throughout the year. For Homecoming the two clubs got together on Saturdays and after school to build a float. The theme was the Jolly Green Giant. Steve Chamberlain was the giant and some of the Key Club and Demoiselle members dressed up as canned vegetables and walked along with the float. During the Christmas season Key Club and Demoiselles gave two families a Christmas. They brought food, a Christmas tree with decorations, and presents. After this was de- livered the two organizations got together for Christmas caroling and a party at Mr. Spitler's home. Demoiselles and Key Club have also had separate work proiects to help organizations around the city. Demoiselles have worked for the Arthritis Foundation and during Easter made tray favors and decorations for the Mis- sion Convalescent Home. Key Club has worked on distributing coin banks for Muscular Distrophy to the down- town area. The volunteer work which is offered by these organizations is to help the community. They have worked very hard and have had much success. This is not all work, because there is also a great deal of fun that is in- volved with these service proiects. GERMAN CLUB This year the Ger- man Club has John Lee as their presi- dent. Judy Weber is the club's vice pres- ident and Yvonne Atkins is both treas- urer and secretary. In the month of October the club had ca feast in the home of Mrs. Pap- lawsky, the sponsor. They have also had two school sales. The interest is in the German culture and in socializing out- side of class. The cnib is planning a trip to Los Angeles to see a German film and then go to a German restau- rant. ...J Row 1: J. Under his leadership the pro- gram made great progress and San Diego High once again grew toward a position of musical respect. The stage band program greatly broadened the versatility of the music program. The orchestra achieved several fine honors and worked hard to lay the foundation of larger orchestras in the coming years. It was a year of hard work for all instrumentalists, but a year of tremendous growth for the music program. 71 Row l: P. Hunn, M. Olds, J. Crawford, K. Clark, V. Willis, M. Christianson, S. Clark, D. One of our greatest handicaps was the lack of varsity experience. Highlights of the season were touchdown runs by Steve Billings and Robert Johnson, and Gerald Lewis' touchdown kickoff return against Servite. Excitement came from touchdown passes of Leonard Simon and Glenn Callan. Players on the offensive line who produced excellent blocking were Frank Piranio, Phil Adair, and Charles Glazener. End Howard Chase caught passes for either touchdowns or for long gains. Our defense, led by Joe Giammarinaro, .loe Lupian, Bruce McFarlan, and Greg Antos did well this year. LEAGUE SDHS-CRAWFORD ln our first Eastern League game of the season-Crawford-the Cavers were unable to score in the first half. Trailing 28-O, San Diego went to the air scoring three times. The first touchdown came when Leonard Simon hit Gerald Williams with a 45 yard pass. No sooner had the de- fense, led by Robert Johnson, Barry Allen, Greg Antos, Joe Giammarin- aro, and Marvin Burks given the ball back to San Diego, when Glenn Callan threw a 45 yard pass to Wil- liams for the second Caver score. The third San Diego touchdown was set up when Howard Chase alertly covering a Caver punt, recovered the fumble of Crawford's receiver. San Diego scored when Callan threw a l2 yard pass to Steve Billings. San Diego, in the second half, passed for over 200 yards while Gerald Wil- liams caught two touchdown passes. Other standouts were Jerimiah Frost, Steve Vanella, and Leo Casias. Howard Chase catches long gainer against Saints. SDHS-ST. AUGUSTINE The Cavers, anxious to upset Saints at their homecoming, played Saints even in the first quarter. The Cavemen, trying to open up holes in the Saints' line, were held to limited yardage in the first half. Juniors Bruce McFarlan and Joe Lupian aided by Seniors Frank Piranio, Marco Miranda, and Jim Taranto did an excellent defensive iob keeping Saints from scoring during the second half. Saints won 88 the game 27-O. lCTlON SDHS-HOOVER The game at Hoover saw the spirited Covers awaiting the league-leading Cardinals. Trailing 14-O in the second quarter, San Diego drove 65 yards to score with Robert Johnson taking the ball for the last l2. The final Caver touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Leonard Simon threw a long pass down field which bounced off a Card- inal defender's hands and into the arms of Dale Davis. A big play at the beginning of the game took place when Howard Chase caught an apparent 72 yard touchdown pass only to have a penalty nullify the score. The final score was Hoover 28-'l2. Jerimiah Frost awaits touchdown pass SDHS-LINCOLN The Cavers started the Lincoln game by recovering the ball on the opening kickoff and driving deep into Lincoln territory. Although the ball switched hands after four downs, Joe Giammarinaro recovered Lincoln's fumble on their l7 yard line. Early in the second quarter, Steve Billings scored. Frank Piranio, Howard Chase, and Charlie Glazener led the offense while Jim Taranto, Bruce McFarlan, and Joe Lupian did solid defensive work. Gerald Lewis also made a 65 yard interception run in the fourth quarter. Lincoln won the game 20-6. Steve Billings outruns Lincoln defenders. 89 SDHS-MORSE The Covers threatened first against Morse when Leonard Simon directed a drive down to the Morse 5 yard line. A fumble ended the threat, however. San Diego came close to scoring again but a touchdown pass fell incom- plete. The lone Caver touchdown came when Leonard Simon threw a scoring pass to Howard Chase. Morse won 21-7. Standouts were Barry Allen, Robert Johnson, Mar- vin Burks, and David Johnson. The terrific teamwork and accurate shooting of Oscar Foster, combined with the speed and agility of Johnny Otis, were the greatest individual contributions to the team. There were many other outstanding players: John Bohler, with his accuracy in shooting and few mistakes, Caesar Aguirre, with his great hustling and good defense, and Orie McLemore, with his good shooting and dribbling. After winning the San Diego Kiwanis Tournament, they went on to the tough San Bernardino Tournament to win four out of five games. The team then won the Eastern League championship, and first place in the San Diego California lnterscholastic Federation championship with a record of twenty-nine wins and two losses! Oscar Foster broke his own scoring record by scoring forty-one points in a single game. Oscar also broke the all-county record of 1416 points by scoring 1766 points in only three years! The tension mounted near the end as Oscar and Caesar nearly fouled out, but the entire team effort was the controlling factor as San Diego won 75-66. On Saturday night the Mt. Miguel team was behind in scoring the first half, but gained points alternately with San Diego to keep both crowds cheering as if the game depended on it. Johnny Otis gained a one-point lead for the team by a free throw in the last few seconds, and from there the gym broke into a huge chant of We're Number One! as San Diego High won the 1967 C.l.F.
