acufty a faculty, no not just a faculty, but that of san diego high school. the senior class of l953 thanks you for your knowledge, your smiles, and your patience. three years have passed since we crossed the threshold of this gray castle and met you, the educators. in these years we have grown a little older and possibly a little wiser through your efforts. as principals, you are the foundation of our school, as teachers, the helpers of our studiesg as coun- selors, the holders of our confidenceg and as friends, companions both in work and play. with your guidance we have obtained a basic edu- cation and are able to visualize our hopes and our ambitions. you have opened to us the vast opportunities of today and have prepared us to be the adults of tomorrow. to you, the faculty, our gratitude.

there is an oft-quoted saying of abraham lincoln which I first read when I was a senior graduating from high school, and while I must confess that there have been times since when l have honored it more in the breach than the observance, nevertheless it has remained as one of the sparkplugs of whatever effort I have put forth. lincoln said, you remember, I will work hard and prepare myself, and some day my chance will come. no sensible senior, as he looks out into the world today, can fai!.to see the many opportunities that are there for him to grasp, whether it be on the athletic field, in the class room, working at a job, or in the defense of his country-certainly nowhere else in the world are such opportunities available. but those chances might just as well not exist if you are not ready to seize upon them. may you have as many of them as you deserve.
