Check Mate BACK ROW-Tim Riley, Alan Yager, John Monk Kari Opland, Mr. Robins FRONT ROW-Kim Slade, Bruce Bent, John Farr To promote the game of chess, and to further it in popularity among the San Clemente High School students was the purpose of the 1970- 71 Chess club. With Mr. Robins acting as advisor, the club sponsored activities such as Days of the Ab- surd . Which included many ridiculous con- tests exemplified by the contest where a liquid soap was whipped to suds and placed in a tub and the contestants guessed how many hours it would take the suds to disappear. Chess is a very misunderstood game. Most people think that it is very slow and dull, but ac- tually once you get involved the game becomes very exciting. That is what we are trying to bring to the students. stated Bruce Brent, the only officer of the club, or should we call him King?

According to Dan Snipes, the president of the Sailing Club, We are teaching the basic fundamentals of sailing to anyone interested in learning them. That was precisely what the 1970-71 Sailing Club did. Involved in several campus activities, the club sponsored sailing races to all those in- terested in getting into the competition. Giving the orders to the rest of the crew were Dan Snipes, captain; Kitty Hall, first mate; Sue Rosoff, second mate; and Tom Morris, third mate.
