During the school year of 1970-71 the purpose of AFS was to raise 850 dollars to send a stu- dent of San Clemente High School to a foreign country. Being a member of this club is a prime opportunity for high school students to learn about the different cultures around the world along with getting to know our own three exchange students from Finland, Germany, and Peru. stated Brandon Birtcher, the president of the club. In order to raise the money the club sponsored a progressive dinner with Laguna Beach High School, a dance after a football game, and a Valentine Day Semi-formal dance. During Club Week the club organized one day to inform the students about AFS. Advised by Mrs. Watt, the ranking members were Brandon Birtcher, president; Hartmut Eic- her, first vice president; Sabina Astete, second vice president; Eeva Hara, third vice president; and Steve Hockett, secretary-treasurer. This years membership seemed extremely excited and eager to earn the money. added Bran- don.

Hartmut Eicher Sabina Astete H: U- America Makes Three New Friends San Clemente High was introduced to three new friends this year. Eeva Hara, Hartmut Eicher, and Sabina Astete took little time in learning the customs of the country. Their pleasant per- sonalities enriched the experience of the students of San Clemente. Eeva Hilkka Maria Hara was born December 4, 1953. Her birth- place was Helsinki, Finland, the land of sixty thousand lakes, the land of pine forests. She was the seventh child of nine children. Apparently she was used to being around a lot of people, and she showed it this year with her outgoing personality. Her American family was the Hunt family of Capistrano Beach. When asked to comment on her stay in America, she replied, I am having the most exciting year of my life living in California, experiencing the country, the people, and the life style. I don't want to think about the sad day when I have to leave all my friends in America. Hartmut Eicher, born in Velheim, West Germany, November 15, 1952, lived all his life until this year on the edge of the Blue Dan- ube. He has one brother and two sisters. 1 came to meet new people and to live with different customs, says Hartmut. And I'm enjoying and have enjoyed every minute of the stay. Hartmut lived with the Hocketts while here in San Clemente. Sabina Astete was our guest from Lima Peru. She was born Aug- ust 29, 1953, and she is the third child of a family of five children. During her stay in San Clemente she became a part of the Rhoads family. She shared many interest with her sister Vicky Rhoads. I have found a great many similarities between my two 'families' and have had a wonderful experience in this country through the great and unique AFS program. To turn the phrase, the AFS guests gave us all a wonderful ex- perience through the unique AFS program .
