Coach Eades Coach Niedhart Football The football season of 1970 resulted in two things: One, the Tritons ended with a winning season for the first time since 1967. And two, they established themselves as a power in the Crestview league. Enthusiastically supported by the student body, the team beat Laguna Beach, Foothill, Tustin, Mission Viejo, and El Modena. When the season was over and the dust cleared, the Tritons were in third place. Following the old adage - A good offense needs a good defense -the San Clemente defense was feared throughout the league. Led by such headhunters as Tim Duvall, Ray Cannavo, and Nolen Boyer, the defense was not only efficient but powerful. And led by quarterback Keith Gibson, the offense did its job too. It provided a powerful running machine. Clark Jarrett, Tom Morris, Bob McNamara, and Ray Cannavo compared with any runners in the league. Of course, Gibson's potent passing also accounted for many of the scores. The prime receivers, Anderson and Allavie snatched many out of the air. The crowning achievement for the Tritons was beating second place El Modena in the last game of the season. The Tritons were spoilers. I think that the victory over El Modena could be considered the greatest accomplishment ever acquired by a San Clemente football team, stated interior defensive lineman John Gligo. 1970 was a very good year for football for the San Clemente Tritons.
