In l883, he esTablished a privaTe high school, The TirsT one in San Bernardino. IT was called STurges Academy. WiTh The esTablish- menT OT The school, The hisTory OT San Bernardino High School began. Ivlr. STurges mainTained his school, which was IocaTed on The norTh side OT 4Th sTreeT, a shorT disTance easT OT D sTreeT, unTil The ciTy OT San Bern- ardino decided To begin a public high school in l884. The ciTy hired an archiTecT Trom The EasT To come and build The school. NOT knowing anyThing abouT The climaTe OT SouThern CaliTOrnia, The archiTecT builT The school as mosT schools were builT in The EasT. IT was a Tour-sTory brick sTrucTure, designed To keep The heaT in during The cold winTers. RepOr'TedIy, This is exacTIy whaT iT did, buT iT did iT during The hoT summers. The school was builT on The souThwesT corner OT 8Th and E sTreeTs where STurges Junior High School is Today. Mr. STurges was hired by The ciTy To Teach maTh To The sTudenTs OT The new school, which numbered around 40 or 50 sTudenTs. ATTer several years OT devOTing Themselves To The TradiTional idea OT Teaching Their sTudenTs The basic TundamenTaIs OT knowledge, The TaculTy OT l903-O4 per- miTTed The organizaTi-on OT The AssociaTed STudenT Body. The year aTTer ThaT, The school wiTnessed The blossoming TorTh OT several exTra-curricular acTiviTies, such as The beginning OT The Tyro, organizaTion OT debaTe and aThleTic Teams. The Tyro was a quarTerly publicaTiOn, perTorming The combined Task OT yearbook, newspaper and liTerary magazine. OTher acTiviTies ThaT apparenTly had The blessing OT The adminisTraTion OT The school were Those OT Two TraTerniTies and Three sororiTies. AssociaTe ediTor OT The Tyro Tor The year ICIO7 was James A. OuThrie, now ediTor emeriTus OT The San Bern- ardino Sun-Telegram and chairman OT The board OT The Sun Company. His son, James K. GuThrie, now Sun publisher, was also on The Tyro sTaTT when he graduaTed in l93l. His son, OranT Holcomb, Jr., who now works Tor CBS as a news com- menTaTor in Los Angeles, is also an SBHS grad. A Tew years laTer, in l909-IO, while San Bernardino was sporTing an overTlowing sTudenT body OT an even 400, an assembly was arranged Tor The sTudenTs To hear a lecTure ThaT would be impossible Tor sTudenTs Today To hear. The speaker was a genTleman named Dr. Ban- croTT, and his subiecT was The AssassinaTion OT PresidenT Lincoln. As an eyewiTness, he said, I remember iT vividlyfi DeaTh OT Mr. STurges ln I9lO-I I, San Bernardino was a sad school indeed. AT The commencemenT exercises, Mr, STurges, as was cusTomary, was scheduled To address The senior class. As he rose Trom his seaT and mounTed The podium, he was sTruck down by a hearT aTTack. He Tell inTo The arms OT Mr. L. L. Beeman. principal OT The school, and died. The sTudenTs and TaculTy boTh were in a sTaTe OT shock and grieT Tor many days aTTerward. In The years immediaTely beTore The moving OT The high school To iTs presenT siTe, sTudenTs Tormed several new clubs, including The LaT-aLOTs, a dramaTic group and The Torerunner OT The presenT-day Thespians. An- oTher club -was The OSS, or Order -OT The Silver Sword. ITs purpose was To meeT once a week in order To read and sTudy The Bible. Because OT The crowded and nearly unbearable con- CIiTiOns OT The school, The School Board sTarTed acTiOn To geT a new school builT ThaT would have pIenTy OT room To expand. Many siTes were looked over, and Tinally one was decided upon. A large hunk OT cow pasTure IocaTed on The corner OT Two dirT paThs known as I9Th and E sTreeTs was purchased. In lvlarch, l9I5, The cornersTOne OT The main building was laid on The siTe by principal L. L. Beeman. ln his dedicaTion address, Mr. Beeman revealed The greaT plans he had Tor The TuTure OT The school. ATTer The iniTial consTrucTion OT The AdminisTraTion, Science, Classics and Home Ec buildings, Tive more were To be added as soon as possible. They were The bOy's and girl's gymnasium, The caTeTeria as well as agriculTural and commercial buildings. UnTil The caTeTeria could be builT, sTudenTs could eaT in The basemenT OT The Classics building, where The STudenT STore is now IocaTed. The paying OT Taxes, however. has changed very liTTle Trom The good Old days. Harrassed by people who were againsT building a high school in The TirsT place, Mr. Beeman pleaded Tor one more school improvmenT: l wanT To say iT is posiTively criminal To compel The pupils To go Trom one building To anoTher when iT is pouring down rain, geTTing Their cloThes and books drenched, and Thenlhave To remain all day in Their weT cloThing. and TO climb The Two exTra TlighTs OT sTairs when iT can all be avoided by expending a Tew hundred dollars. .Thus began The TiTTy year hisTOry OT San Bernardino High School aT iTs presenT siTe. 1915-1934 Because OT The disTance OT The new high school Trom downTown San Bernardino, many sTudenTs Took The sTreeT car To The end OT The line, Then walked The resT OT The way To school. Some Highland and RialT0 sTudenTs even rode horses To class. Hail, Hail SB High Early in The year OT l9l5-l6, Principal Beeman Offered a prize OT one dollar To The person who wguld Wrife 5 school hymn Tor SBHS. Two boys, Clarence Oreenhood
