Single-handedly he left his ranks to wipe out f i v e enemy machine gun nests and fifteen of the enemy's men. No greater sacrifice can be made by a citizen, than to place in ieopardy his life that his fellow men may live. Congressional Medal of Honor awardee JOSEPH C. RODRIGUEZ luclsdlmwws ' Come, ioin us as we tour a new, spectacular city, a city within a city, that grows with each coming year. As you know, Cardinal City has increased in population by three hundred over last'year's population. Not only has our city grown ,in quantity but also in quality, for this year, our citizens went to assemblies without the supervision of the faculty. Our city, like its citizens, is also one of many moods. There's the sober side, reflected in the passing of laws for civic improvement by a capable mayor and his board of commis- sioners. The lighter side is shown by the gaiety of a pep rally and the proud marching of our red-and gray clad band. Another mood, yet to be shown, is the mood of confusion, reflected in the shuffling from class to class. These are only a few of our city's many moods, you will note many others as we precede with this tour. As we reach the climax of this tour, you will realize the importance of our town and its citizens. Having been the editor of your yearbook this year has been a great pleasure and honor. On behalf of the Tyro Staff, I would like to express our thanks for serving you. F 9521 1 . 4 1 ,. -I . A ----M' Q 3' J , ,- L , ,W,:':..'u, M-muh ,7 Ji' Y' -.': , ,.' . Around 7:00 the stands start filling, the girls wave pom pon's in your face and if you're lucky, you get a megaphone. Then the Cheer leader interrupts your view of the game by demanding that you fight on for old S.B.H.S. By the time the fray is over, you pull yourself together and try to forget all the work you have to do the next day. B. L. road cluttered with steep grades and chuck holes. In its first run down John Muir way, the machine appeared to be pretty well oiled. Gon- zales, alternating at quarterback with Phelps, shifted the gears at the right time to net them a 19-15 victory. Then came an uncommonly rough iolt from San Diego Hoover that almost iarred it apart. Demonstrating its champion-like recuperative powers, the machine tuned up like new, rammed its way through a hopeless Long Beach eleven 39-0. The motor strained even harder as it took a 7-O defeat from Redlands and a 32-13 beat- ing from Chaffey. However, the tune-up job that Chief Mechanic Paul Taylor performed on the machine was iust what was needed to give that extra spark to carry it to a 27-20 vic- tory over its final C.B.L. opponent, Riverside. Then it further showed its previously supressed power with a 14-7 triumph over Santa Paula. Before That Touchdown Offensive ROW ONE- S. Lemmond, J. Wood, R. Jimenez, E. Yorba, J. Ferguson, J. The Colton Yellowjackets made a close but decisive victory of 46-43 over the Redbirds, notable playing done by spirited Chuck Calderhead and cen ter Glen Harrison. The Card Cagemen took a win of 55-37 over Redlands with the help of big Sophmore Dave Heeres and Tom Wendt, card speed demon who played one of their best games. The Card City Cage men made their initial appearance in the Monrovia game in which they fell 43-38. The second game was dropped to Covina, although Atwood Grandberry made 29 points. Similarly, our Cardinal City, having its being within the framework of the State Board of Education and the local Board of Education, finds certain ambassadors present who represent the state and local Boards and who exercise those powers and controls which are in- herent in and retained by the state and local Boards of Education . Our faculty then, are ambassadors plenipotentiary representing the state and local Boards of Education. Every responsible government accords its visiting ambassadors the respect and honor their high office commands. The same dignity and honor should be paid our teachers, ambassadors - of - good - will, who give so generously of their time and energies to make Card- inal City a shining example of democratic probity! In the person of Mr. Victor Hodge we find such a man. Graduating from Cardinal City in 1910 with an outstanding record in C.B.L. track circles, he went on to the University of California lBerkeleyj where he continued to star in athletics. After graduating from college he went into the coaching profession at Santa Maria High School where he helped develop the talents of Ernie Nevers, one of the few athletes to be compared favorably with the great Jim Thorpe. Leaving the teaching profession for a career in business, Victor Hodge became a successful businessman. The desire to serve, which is inherent in any good teacher, called him back to his alma mater in 1926. Because his retirement is a recent one, it would be superfluous to attempt to recount his many services. Merely let it be said that Mr. Victor N. Hodge, after teaching at San Bernardino High for twenty-six years, has retired. Big City Queen For the first time in several years San Bernardino's own candidate for Orange Show Queen was chosen, she is lovely Miss Paula Fagette of the class of '52.
