L- U15 'W USS SAMUEL GQMPERS USS SAMUEL GOMPERS QAD 375 is the first L .S. Navy ship to bear the name ofa distinguished labor leader. 'l'he destroyer tender was commissioned on l Klulv lflfi7 following a three-year construction period in Bremerton. Wash. lt is one ofthe largest destroyer tenders in the Pacif- ic Fleet and is assigned to Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group l, located in San Diego. The SAMUEL GOMPERS' primary mission is to pro- vide repair services to afloat combatant units ofthe LIS. Navy, including nuclear-powered surface ships and air- craft carriers. In addition to its repair mission. the SAMUEL GOM PERS also provides logistic and material support to tended units. Personnel and disbursing services, messing, and medical and dental care are also provided to the crews of tended units. USS SAMUEL GOMPERS was the first ship in the U.S. Pacific Fleet to have enlisted women serve in its crew. l'he first women assigned to the ship reported aboard in lune lfl79. The SAMUEL GOMPERS is 645 feet long with a beam of 85 feet. It displaces 20,289 tons when fully loaded, and has a navigational draft of 26 feet. Its 20,000 shaft horse ower single-screw propulsion plant produces a top P speed in excess of 20 knots. Designed to be manned by 39 officers and 1,200 en- listed crewmembers, the ship also can accommadate a flag officer and flag staff. Known as Super Sam, the tender has made 14 de- ployments as a unit of the U .S. Pacific Fleet. ommandin fficer C s CAPT Amerault . . VY CAPT Amerault was graduated from the US. Naval Academy, and commissioned an Ensign in the Navv on 9 june 1965. After receiving his commission, CI.-Xlfl' .-Xmerault served at sea aboard the destrover USS MASSEY QDD 7783 as Gunnery Officer and as First Lieutenant. This tour was highlighted by a circurnnavigation ol the globe and Lt tour on the Naval Cunfire support gun line off ofSouth Yiet- nam. He then was assigned as CDfticer-in-Charge of Patrol Craft Fast 52, and as Operations Officer in Coastal Divi- sion 14 in South Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star Medal with for combat during this tour. Other sea billets to which CA RI' Amerault has been assigned include: Iingiiieering Officer of the destrovers USS TAYLOR QDD 4683 and USS BENNER QDD 8073, and Executive Officer of the destrover USS DUPONT IDD 9413 and the destroyer tender USS SIERRA QAD I83. In March IQ84 he assumed dutv as the commissioning Commanding Officer of USS NICHOLAS QFFG 473. L'n- der CARI' Amerault's command, USS NICHOLAS was awarded two consecutive Battle Ffliciencv .-Xwxirtls as hest ship in her class in Destroyer Squadron ti, and the .-Xtlantic Fleet Colden Anchor Award for best retention among all ships of its comparative size in the Atlantic Fleet. In addition to the zihove billets, he has also served as Staff Combat Information Center Officer for Command- er. Cruiser Destroyer Croup 2, and as Deputv Director and then Acting Director, Program Resource Appraisal Divi- sion in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations lOP- 8l3. CAPT Ainerault assumed command of USS SAM- UEL GOMPERS QAD 373 on 1-I Nlulv 1989. CARI' Amerault is a graduate ofthe L'.S. Naval Post- graduate School with the degree of Master of Science in Operations Research, and of the L'niversitv of L'tah with the degree of Master of Arts in Middle East Studies and Arabic. He was a 1986-87 Federal Executive Fellow at the Rand Corporation. He wears the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star vvzY QV to denote Valor3, the Meritorious Service Medal ftwo awards3,joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Com- mendation Medal tthree awards3, and other campaign and Vietnam service medals.
