The Gompers Heritage uss SAMUEL GOMPERS 1AD-371 is the .first Ship Of the fleet named for a great American who., beginning in W5 teens' devoted a long life to labor and American ideals. He was ons of the founders of the American Federation of Labor ,an served nearly half a century as the official head of the AmerlC-Hn labor movement. His life was keyed to fervent belief in trade union ideals emphasizing individualism, freedom and democ- racy. Samuel L. Gompers was born in London in 1850, was early apprenticed to a cigar maker, and then immigrated to New York in 1863. One year later at the age of 14, he became associated with the labor movement. He helped organize and became President of the Cigarmaker's International Union which be- came a model for others to follow. ln 1881 , came the next step, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of the United States and Canada . As chairman of the committee he worked out the final l f , p an or that organization which later was reorganized as the American Federation of Labor in 1886. Gompers was elected President and served in that capacity for more than four decades as the official head of the American labor movement Before the American Federation of Labor was founded in 1881, the labor movement was in the hands of comparatively small individual unions throughout the various states, all work- ing without much cooperation. Upon formation of the federa- tion, Gompers took the helm as its president and welded the labor movement into a compact unit which has grown to be a power in the political, commercial and industrial life of the U.S. Gompers believed in America and taught patriotism to all his followers. He kept labor on a conservative field and free from radicalism b ' ' y his leadership. A fearless exponent of right and a great humanitarian he was al E D , soagreat fighter. Hefought for peace in industry and blazed a trail for others to follow. His work for nearly half a century was dedicated to advance the lot of men and women for labor. lt was his firm conviction that labor could never displac ' U e management of industry that made it possible for him to enter into su Q ccessful negotiations with industry. These were the noble principles which typified the aim of me fe of Samue' G0mD9rs. His life was a tribute to the contri- bution ofthe foreign born Of - this country.
