BMC Wright Normington Deck Department has three primary missions which consist of the following: The preservation and mainte- nance of the outer portion of the ship including over the side, superstructure and all weather decks. Performing all deck seamanship evolutions: anchoring, underway replenishment, crane services and operation of the ship's small boats. Additionally, it provides support to Repair Department in the areas of rigging, tile team, spray painting team and running the Canvas Shop. Con- ducting all helo flight operations, from passenger trans- fer to vertical replenishments. Deck Department pro- vides approximately 900fo of all bridge watchstations. During this deployment the department's capabili- ties were thoroughly tested. Not often performed evolu- tions such as: mooring to a buoy in Hong Kong, use of I the pusher boats to help bring ship's alongside, burning of 25,000 cubic feet of trash over the side while at anchor at Masirah, providing water taxi services to the battle group, transferring heavy lift aircraft engines via small boats between the USS CARL VlNSONand the USS SAN JOSE, receiving over 150 pallets of cargo via vertical re- plenishments and numerous other smaller evolutions that kept us very busy. Throughout this deployment hard work and long hours were the standard operating tempo. We do it with pride and adhere to the ship's motto, Service Supreme . 21

Scruggs 1st Division is responsible for keeping the starboard side, forecastle, and portions of the 01 level ship-shape and spit shined. They perform preservation on the starboard quarterdeck shack too. lst Division also mans the bow anchor handling room, an im- portantjob when it comes to piloting restrict- ed waters or visiting shallow ports such as Hong Kong.
