A LV,Vf fir, 'il' VV K CAPTAIN ROBERT E AMOS UNITED STATES NAVY Robert E. Amos the son of Mr. and lVlrs. Jamen F. Lefler of Bluefield Virginia graduated from Vir- ginia Polytechnic University in 1959 with a BS degree in General Science and was employed as a teacher and administrator in the public schools of the Com- monwealth of Virginia prior to earning his commis- sion in the U. S. Navy in November 1963. Following tours of duty in USS COCHRANE fDDG 211 and USS GOODHICH IDDR 8311 Captain Amos attended the Naval Postgraduate School re- ceiving a Master of Science Degree in Oceanogra- phy. During a one year tour of duty in the Republic of Vietnam he served as Officer in Charge of the Na- val Advisory Team Vinh Long. He was subsequently assigned as Executive Officer of USS VESOLE 1DD 8781 in which he deployed to South America. Captain Amos served with the Federal German Navy from 1975-1979 as an instructor as the Naval Weapons School and a student as the German Com- bined Staff College in Hamburg Germany. Upon his return to the United States in October 1979 he re- ported aboard USS BRYCE CANYON fAD 361 serv- ing as Executive Officer until its decommissioning in June 1981. After short tours of duty with Commander Naval Surface force IVIIDPAC and Commander Destroyer Squadron 33 Captain Amos assumed command of USS MAUNA KEA 1AD-221 in July 1982. Upon com- pletion of MAUNA KEA S seven month deployment to the Western Pacific in August 1984 he was re- lieved and reported to Commander Service Group 1 for duty as Chief Staff Officer. In August 1985 Cap- tain Amos assumed command of USS SAMUEL GOMPERS IAD-371 ln addition to various campaign and unit awards Captain Amos wears the Bronze Star with combat V and the Navy commendation Medal. John D. Cann, the son of Mrs. Eleanor H. Cann, of Hampton, Virginia, graduated from the University of Virginia in 1971 with a BA iwith distinctioni in History. He earned his commis- sion in the United States Navy through the regular NBOTC pro- gram at the University of Virgin- Following tours of duty on USS EVANS 1DE 10231 and USS STERETTICG 311 Commander Cann returned to the University of Virginia to teach NBOTC from 1975 to 1978 and then to attend Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business Administra- tion from which he received an MBA degree in 1980. He was subsequently assigned to the USS McCANDLESS IFF-10841 as Engineer Officer and USS IN- DEPENDENCE 1CV-62j as Damage control Assistant. He reported onboard USS SAMUEL GOMPERS 1AD-371 in April 1986 to serve as Executive Cffi- cer. ln addition to various unit awards Commander Cann has received the Navy Commenda- tion Medal with Gold Star in lieu of second award.
