He was ons of the founders of the American Federation of Labor ,an served nearly half a century as the official head of the AmerlC-Hn labor movement. His life was keyed to fervent belief in trade union ideals emphasizing individualism, freedom and democ- racy. Samuel L. Gompers was born in London in 1850, was early apprenticed to a cigar maker, and then immigrated to New York in 1863. One year later at the age of 14, he became associated with the labor movement. He helped organize and became President of the Cigarmaker's International Union which be- came a model for others to follow. ln 1881 , came the next step, the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of the United States and Canada . As chairman of the committee he worked out the final l f , p an or that organization which later was reorganized as the American Federation of Labor in 1886. Gompers was elected President and served in that capacity for more than four decades as the official head of the American labor movement Before the American Federation of Labor was founded in 1881, the labor movement was in the hands of comparatively small individual unions throughout the various states, all work- ing without much cooperation. Upon formation of the federa- tion, Gompers took the helm as its president and welded the labor movement into a compact unit which has grown to be a power in the political, commercial and industrial life of the U.S. Gompers believed in America and taught patriotism to all his followers. He kept labor on a conservative field and free from radicalism b ' ' y his leadership. A fearless exponent of right and a great humanitarian he was al E D , soagreat fighter. Hefought for peace in industry and blazed a trail for others to follow. His work for nearly half a century was dedicated to advance the lot of men and women for labor. lt was his firm conviction that labor could never displac ' U e management of industry that made it possible for him to enter into su Q ccessful negotiations with industry. These were the noble principles which typified the aim of me fe of Samue' G0mD9rs. His life was a tribute to the contri- bution ofthe foreign born Of - this country. He never forgot the American flag and the ideals and trad't' f ' ' N A throughout his busy me' i ions or which it stands, ,461 1 is -1 ,ar fa , , ' fit.:-' 1. '15-. A. f - nl. .GAG ,. 1-mu 4 K ' .L . Additionally, it provides support to Repair Department in the areas of rigging, tile team, spray painting team and running the Canvas Shop. While underway to the Philippines it was decided that the time had come to Sally the ship. ln other words, test the ship's stability. The crew all gathered in their appropriate man overboard sta- tions fmost being on the Flight Deck or Forecastlel. As the captain faithfully cried Sally Ship the crew proceeded to lumber to the ship's port side. As everyone waited for the ship to overturn and tumble into the sea for ev- ermore, the Captain again cried, Sally Ship . This time the crew made their way back to the starboard side. All was well. Sallying Ship refers to the proce- dure of rolling a ship and timing the peri- od ofthe roll. The rolling, of course, is imposed on the ship by all hands running from side to side at a given signal. The specifications say the order to run port or starboard should be given about a second or two before the ship reaches the end of each successive roll. When the ship reaches between 5 de- grees and 10 degrees everyone will be ordered back to midships. The procedure is repeated 4 or 5 complete rolls and timed. These calcula- tions are used to determine our initial stability. The drill is also dependent on ,.. -1, the state of the seas. After the crew was finally ordered back to mldships with their knees wob- bling and sweat flowing, it was finally over. 'r- , ,.- .. ,C 'fra 4 3 agile I Q ' 0 . ? A roar escaped some, a tear for others and for all a collective sigh of re- lief that we had finally made it back. A ship full of sailors left and a crew re- turned ones who would help each other when needed. An End-of Cruise Prayer O Lord, our Lord, this long, long voyage is done. Our ship has sailed throug sought was won. Not one of us was perfect- each one of us was, and t be human And in that humaness we find continues o , . our closest tie to God. In times of sadness and loneliness ' I we sometimes cried and we recalled that Jesus aso h calm and storm, each port we cried. Many times we laughed and were joyous in the Com- an of shipmates - and we recalled God's ioy with chil- P V dren on His knee or sharing a meal with His friends. k hard Often the watches were long and the wor was , mind, body and spirit T-I-R-E-D. Sometimes the wrong tubes arrived, or the fresh milk ran short or we were called upon to do a job we were not 'able' to do - but we found a way - ' we created a way, and were reminded that God too found a way to do the 'impossible' in bring- ing salvation to sinful men and women. The day came at last when we turned the brow to- wards home but still there were strange ports to visit, work to be done, hardships and pain to be endured and tear-stained joy to be experienced before we were se- cured in home port. All those events came and went. Now the home pon and people we love and defend were in sight. As our ship touched the dock, as family and friends welcomed us home, we were reminded of the time when our God will welcome us into the eternal home He has prepared for those who love him. O Lord, our Lord grant Each of us as successful a voyage into Your eternal kingdom. - Amen. x ' 1 4 .132 g ,ff 7 d - ' f.4:v?3,31V.w, f-ig.:5.N E1- 11,515 Lf ' , ..4 .1 I .gr , . ,1.',, I. , , . .
