COMMANDING OFFICER Captain Fred W. Bailey served in submarines as an enlisted man for three years. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Denver at Denver, Colorado, he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in October l958. Following completion of Deep Sea Diving School, Captain Bailey served on board USS Current CARS-225 as Salvage Officer, Operati0nS Officer and Executive Officer. In November l963. Captain Bailey reported to the Fleet Training Group at San Diego where he was the Officer in Charge of a Training and Transfer Team engaged in training foreign crews and transferring ships under the Militaty Assistance Program. ln July l966 he assumed command of the USS Jerome County CLST-8481 and commanded that ship for two years, completing two deployments to Southeast Asia, during which time Jerome County was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. ln August 968 Captain Bailey reported to the U. S. Naval War College, Newport. Rhode Island. as a student in the Naval College of Command and Staff. Upon graduation he was assigned to the Staff of the War College where he served until July l97l. He returned to sea duty in September of l97l assuming command of USS Bridget CDD'lO24j. On II January l974, Captain Bailey assumed command of USS O'Callahan CFF- IOSD and remained in command until October of l975, at which time he reported to the staff of Commander Third Fleet as Flag Secretary and Aide to the Commander until l July l978. when Captain Bailey assumed command of USS Preble LDDG-463 and served as Commanding Officer until 27 June l98O. Captain Bailey assumed command of USS Samuel Gompers CAD-375 on lS November I98O. Captain Bailey holds a Master of Science degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. His military decorations and service awards include the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat In addition he wears the Combat Action Ribbon. Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation. National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal. Viet Nam Service Medal Cwith four QIGFSJ. Republic of Viet Nam Distinguished Service Order Second Class Medal. Republic of Viet Nam Gallantr C U y ross Ribbon. Unit Nations Service Medal and the Viet Nam Campaign Medal. Navy Expeditionary Medal and Sea Service Ribbon. Captain Bailey is married to the former Melissa Dilbeck of Butte. Montana. The Baileys reside in El Cajon. After graduating from Castle Heights Military Academy in l959, he attended Middle Tennessee State University receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in l965. Commander Sweatt enlisted ij the Naval Reserve ll April I962, and began his active service December l96-4 as an Ensign. He is also a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College. Commander Sweatt has served on USS Basilone fDD824J, USS Tawakoni fATF-ll-lj, USS Noa fDD-84Ip and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower fCVN-699. Other significant tours were with the Naval Advisory Group lVietnamese Riverine Forcesj. Fleet Operations Control Center Europe. and the Joint U. S. Military Mission for Aid to Turkey. Commander Sweatt reported on board SAMUEL COMPERS 25 June l98I for an eighteen month tour. Commander Sweatt has been awarded three Navy Commendation Medals, Republic of Vietnam Staff Service Medal fFirst Classy, and various service and campaign medals and ribbons. Commander Sweatt is married to the former Suzanne Mitchell of Lebanan. Tennessee. They are the parents of Loren and Michael Sweatt. Commander Michael P. Donnelly. U. S. Navy was born in Dallas. Texas on I9 August I94-l. AFter graduating from Auroro High School. Auroro. Colorado in June l962. he entered the U. S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Maryland. Commander Donnelly has served on board the USS Obrien fDD-7255. USS Harwood. followed by his transfer to the Naval Advisory Group. U. S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam. ln May of l972 Commander Donnelly attended the U. S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. California obtaining a Masters Degree in Communications Management. Commander Donnelly returned to the fleet serving on the USS Robert E. Peary QFF-lO73i. He then assumed duties at NAVCAMS. EASTPAC Wahiawa. Hawaii. Commander Donnelly was ordered to the USS Samuel Gompers lADe37t as the Executive Officer in August of l979. The 27th day of June I98l Commander Donnelly logged ashore to attend Senior Officer Naval Warfare Course. Commander Donnelly has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal fSecond Awardh. National Defense Service Medal. Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal. Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation iGallantry CrossO. Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation iCivil Action Medal. First Class color with Palmi.
