During Gompers' duty as on station tender at Diego Garcia, MARS patched numerous calls of various t YP95 to the United States for the crew and the ships I a ongside. Most calls were patched through East Coast gateways. MARS attempted 2 823 calls and com leted ' P l,857 calls. An excellent record considering busy lines, no answers and the fact the station shared frequencies with other ships out to sea using the same frequency. Much credit for getting the station together goes to CWO2 Steve Harris, Communications Dfficer, CWO2 Don Wakida, R-4 Division Officer. and station manager. STGI Johnny Bradshaw. CWO2 Wakida's R-4 Division provided a majority of the manpower utilized in organizing and assembling the station. Various individuals from Repair, Deck, Supply and other departments throughout the ship deserve a royal skinned knuckle award for their perseverence and the sacrifice of much of their own time working on the project. The operators of MARS did so voluntarily, after working their normal jobs, day or night. Each volunteer received many smiles of appreciation for the successful calls. Also each received a Letter of Appreciation from Gompers' Skipper. One more Thank You to the operators for their time and dedicationl Left picture: front row: Lt. ' ' ogistics is the lifeblood of any military organization. This critical function is the responsibility of the Supply Department. The more than 200 men and women of Supply - - take their jobs very seriously. Their work makes the ship more comfortable-clean clothes, a warm meal and putting a little jingle in GOMPERS' personnel's pockets are just a few of the regularly performed functions of Supply. The Supplies life-style of Service Supreme was upheld despite the difficult ports, such as Diego Garcia, in which to run a store, a warehouse, a bank, a bakery and a computer center. LCDR JAMES M. The remote location of Diego Garcia further complicated the logistics pipeline, necessitating the resupply of staple items such as milk and fresh produce as well as high priority repair parts. Why the planes always landed at Diego Garcia at twelve midnight, we'll probably never know regardless of the arrival times. S-I with help from other Supply Divisions routed it on board with the assistance of Boats and Cranes. Once on board the material was enrouted to the requesting divisions or placed in stock.
