Upon the completion of Officer's Candidate School. he was ct:-inmissioned an ensign in October of 1960. The commanders first tour of sea duty was aboard ine minesweeper Loyalty where he served as the Operations Officer. After successive tours aboard the aatrol craft Whitehall and the destroyer Fox, as meutive and Operations Officer, he was assigned to the Navy Reserve Officer Training Command Unit at Tforthwestern University. His duites there included being :Aga engineering and leadership instructor. as well as Fzgnior Class Advisor. Forthcoming was a transition from ieteher to student, as the Racine, Wisconsin native was assigned to the Naval War College. .lust prior to reporting to his next duty assignment, the L. nited States Military Assistance Command Vietnam. our Executive Officer achieved an MS in International Affairs from George Washington University. After serving as Executive Officer onboard the destroyer escort Bradley. Commander Vallin assumed the position from which he reported to the Gompers, that of military secretary to the .loin Chiefs of Staffs Director of Plans and Policy. Commander Vallin's decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal. Joint Service Commendation Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal with bronze star. Additionally. he is the recipient of the National Defense Medal. Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, and Vietnam Campaign Medal, and RVN Gallantry Cross. Commander Vallin is married to the former Mary Fazzari of Racine, Wisconsin. They have two daughters.

California and upon graduation, served as Weapons Officer in the USS Somers QDD-947 .
