CAPTAIN ROBERT B. HOFFMAN 25 June 1976 .. Present Commanding Officer Captain Robert B. Hoffman, U.S. Navy reported to USS SAMUEL GOMPERS from the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations IOPNAVI where he served as the Manager of the Shipbuilding and Conversion, Navy Appropria- tion. Captain Hoffman was born in St. Helena, California, and reared in San Francisco.. He was a graduate from Lowell High School in June 1949 and entered the U.S. Naval Academy in July. He was commissioned Ensign in June 1953. His first assignment was to the USS IRWIN QDD-7491 homeported in Newport, Rhode Island. He then served on the USS COLONIAL QLSD-181 on the West Coast. He then attended the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School In Monterey, majoring in Engineering Electronics tAccousticsI. After graduating in 1959, he commanded USS FAIRVIEW QEPCER-8501, homeported in New London, Connecticut. In 1962 Captain Hoffman reported to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Following this tour, he served as Executive Officer of the USS TURNER JOY QDD-951i homeported in Long Beach, California, and then as Head of the Sonar Systems Evaluation Section of the Kell West Test and Evaluation Detachment. Operational Test and Evaluation Force. In June 1969, he assumed command of the USS ARNOLD J. ISBELL CDD-8691, homeported In Long Beach, California. He then served as the Operations and Plans Officer on the Staff ol Commander Cruiser Destroyer Flotilla THREE- During the academic year 1972-1973 CQDYEW' Hoffman attended and was a Distinguished Graduate of the Naval War College at NewP0n' Rhode Island. Captain Hoffman has been awarded three Bronze Star Medals, Two Navy Unit Commendq' tion Medals-one with Combat V-Two NHVY Un Commendations, the Combat Action Flibbgg and the Navy Distinguished Service Order 2 Class from the former Republic of Vietnam- f He is married to the former Anne Lawv0f 0 Westwood New Jersey.
