Thursday, most of the MW radio station equipment arrived. credit. AN AUINOIIIID LDCOIIICIAI PVIUCATION FOI THE US AIIID FOICIS OF Y I PACIHC COMMAND Vol. 33, No. 34 Friday, Feb. 4, 1977 nz gives Gompers crew a new sound I had all the cables and wires in, said Janz, I was just waiting for the equip- ment to arrive. Janz worked straight through from 6:30 a.m. Thursday until 12:15 p.m. Saturday. He stopped then because he said his eyes were hurting I just crashed on the floor and threw a couple of coats over my head, Janz said. For three hours. I woke up at three, then worked until 2 a.m. Sunday, he said. And the station was complete. He slept all day Sunday. I didn't even know there was a radio station on the Gompers until I was on here for eight months, said the articulate 23-year-old sailor. When Janz finally noted the station's existence, he said BURT JANZ CUES ANOTHER DISC the station played nothing but taped easy listening stuff, requiring little manpower. I came down and volun- teered my services as a technician, said Janz. He maintained the equipment, which wasn't much by radio station standards, during his free time. When the ship went to sea, he noticed there were no live newscasts for the crew's benefit. Janz placed his foot further into the door by broadcasting news, also on his own time. I started out as a tech- nician, and through the needs of the station, started doing more. A time came when the station had to be rebuilt. It was too inefficient. We couldn't make our own adver- tisements. We weren't able to do any editing or sp1icing. The ship allocated about 59,000 for new equipment, Janzsaid. And the carpenter shop built some fancy cabinets to house the new consoles, turntables and control boards. Then it was just a matter of waiting for the new equip- ment to arrive. Janz said he undertook the radio station projects be- cause he likes the work. I think there's a little bit of vanity in everybody, he said, and I like doing things for people. This was my way of doing just a little some- thing for the crew. ? Janz was promoted in No- vember to full-time manager of radio sta tion AD37. I-Ie said despite the work he put into the station, S.CPO Ron Yarbrough actually per- formed 70 per cent of the tasks. Yarbrough was stationman- ager when Janz first became interested in the worqk. He's now the ship's fire marshal, but remains a station advisor. Janz said Yarbrough did all the liaison work between the ship and American Forces Radio and Television Service and the studio equipment company when the station was being rebuilt. Janz said the station today -has a total value of S40,000. In port, the ship taps intothe local stations so we can get production work done, Janz said. At sea, he said, I work from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The station is on the air from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Once every even hour we have a five-minute summary ofnews with expanded, 15-minute reports at noon and 6 p.m. Janz is assisted by pa rt-timers PO 1.C. Ron Cole, PO 2.C. George Singleton, Fireman Dan McGrew, PO 3.C. Craig Fisher and PO 3.C. Wayne Freidig. Janz said Gompers skipper Capt. Robert Hoffman and executive officer Cmdr. homas Davis give the station tremendous moral support. They're very good to me down here. Very good. 1 I x 5 A 1 E! I I I 1 s . On the occasion of your departure from WestPac it is a pleasure to note the high standards of performance and discipline, demonstrated by USS SAMUEL GOMPERS personnel while serving on the Seventh Fleet Team. 2. You clearly came to do a job. You can be proud of the volume and quality of the tender services you performed. l was particularly impressed that SAMUEL GOMPERS turned out more work between 28 Feb and 18 Mar than in any prior three week period in the ship history. The material condition of the SEVENTHFLT Ships you served is much improved as a result of your efforts. 3. As you transit east for a well deserved reunion with family and friends our appreciation for a job well done and our best wishes go with you. VADM Robert B.
