The Trip Home . . . After departing Rota, Spain, we set our course to take us south of the Azores. As we planned to make the trip home in less than eight days, we refueled from a Fleet oiler near the Azores and increased our speed in order to arrive in Newport on 15 October. Two days outside of Newport we encountered heavy weather and were forced to de- crease our speed to avoid damaging the ship. With this decrease in speed went our hopes of possibly arriving in the States a day early. After the heavy weather subsided, however, we were able to increase speed high enough to ensure our entrance into nice, but foggy, Newport on 15 October, as scheduled. One hour after we entered port the RUi3iiR'I'S was deserted except for the duty section and the 1960 Mediterranean Cruise was but a memory. Mediterranean Cruise Statistics 1.
