2800 Attend Musical, cWest Side Stor ' Receiving acclaim as the most successful play in Sam's History, West Side Stoqv set the stage for the school's first all-school musical production. The show ran for three nights from Feb. 17-19. The Drama and the Choir Departments brought in over 353,600 from ticket sales. The show cleared over 3152.500 in profits. Wes! clnherita Runs Three ights Written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, the all-school play at Sam this year was Inherit the Wind, which ran Nov. 18-20. The play is based on the Scopes trial. Dating to the l920's, the trial, sometimes called the monkey trials, concerned the legality of evolution- ary concepts in schools. The cast for the production was rather large. More than 35 people took part in the show. In order to play a more realistic character, each actor studied a set of facts about the monkey trials. Singing Heard As Welcome Howdy Day fell on the morning of Friday, Sept. 10. Although it came earlier than expected, it proved to he a successful initiation of the Sophomore Class to Texan spirit. The first pep rally of the year for the game against Southwest set the stage for the slaughter of the Mick- ies. After the pep rally, seniors and juniors retreated to the courtyard where they anxiously awaited the re- lease of the sophs from their class meeting. The singing session was contin- ued until about ll that morning. An assembly reenacting the tradi- tion was seheduled for the following weekis pep rally but was cancelled. After the game that night was over. a dance was held in the cafete- ria to round out the day's events. On Howdy Day, Mickey Mouse becomes more than just a Disneyland character.
