TO WEIGH AND TO CONSIDER v ' i • t. I J J I3ruj 1 1 VALEDICTORY ADDRESS By Karen Lynn Novak What was our education here really all about? Some words by Sir Francis Bacon might help us answer this question. The sixteenth century scientist once said: Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe on take for granted, but to WEIGH and to CON- SIDER. To weigh and to consider - and especially to question; not only what we have read, but also what we have heard and experienced throughout our years of higher educa- tion. Our initial experience in college, surrounded by a com- bination of anxiety and fear - a fear of something new - seems to leave only a small margin of freedom for ques- tioning what we encounter. For some of us, this first step in learning to question took time. Hopefully, we all ar- rived at the point where our curiosity and our intelli- gent questioning overcame the fear of something new. And the steps we followed were the outline of our learn- ing and growing process. The guidelines for learning for the present, came from our past — our parents, our faculty and our peers. One of the most important guidelines that we had was each other. We helped each other through . . mid-terms, fi- nals, and lab practicals, i.e., Mrs. Bones, formaldehyde and cats! Through research and term papers, with all night typing marathons and a pink and white box of Dunkin 1 Donuts, we kept our blood sugar, as well as our grades, in the passing .one. Some of us went through French Novels and Dr. Vazquez - Buenos Dias, Buenas Tardes, Buenas Noches, (hree limes a week until we were fluent. After Dream Symbolism, we occasionally prac- ticed day dreaming. Physics and the ever injurious sub- ject of electricity, with its own built-in factor of resis- tance, sometimes generated a current of consideration for class cutting, especially on Friday afternoons. And who could forget Chemistry, organic and otherwise, or Dr. DiPippo ' s clear as mud sessions? Fin never gon- na pass this test! Thinking back and reflecting on our times spent here at Salve Rcgina College, it is an exhilarating feeling to rea- lize that we have finally made it! There were numerous good times shared by administration, faculty, parents and students. Such occasions and events as Parents ' Weekend, Student-Faculty sporting events, campus pic- nics, sports banquets and the festivities of Holly Dinner and candle lighting ceremonies all hold memories. There was progress made, and changes took place while we were here. But perhaps the greatest progress and change that occurred was both within and among us all as individuals. Our time spent here and the experience we have acquired will never be duplicated.

Some share only a common past or are able to exper- ience only today together. But we, my friends, are bound by more than this, as we have given, one to the other, a part of who we are and hope to become. M. ILEANA SEANDER
