s II The Newport College - Salve Regina Newport, R.I. INTRODUCTION Salve. To those whose Latin, like my own, consists of habeas corpus, Ibid. ' and E pluribus unum, it means Hail. Hail to you, graduate. You have weathered four years of Nursing, English, Psychology, Biology, Criminal Justice, Medical Technology, Art, Religion, History, Education, Management, etc. For some of us, it was much more of a struggle than for others. Those people particularly merit our applause and respect. And hail, also, to members of the administration, faculty, and staff who evidenced not only a dedication to the Col- lege, but a dedication to the students as well. Some recognized the student as the customer, giving us our money ' s worth; some gave us a good deal more. Hail to those who not only allowed us our integrity, but strengthened it; who treated us an intelligent peers, instead of subservient children. These qualities, many feel, are epitomized by Sister Mary Jean and Sister Mary Eloise Tobin. Their sincerity and the enthusiasm they manage to transmit to their stu- dents is truly astounding. For this reason, this book is dedicated to them. The 1 978 Regina Maris is also dedicated to Peachy Panitz, a former Salve student. Her personality and courage have endeared her to many. Last, but by no means least, hail to the undergraduates. You have made our time spent here not only tolerable, but a pleasure. So take this book; we hope only that you find within its pages a few of the faces that helped you through the tangled web of academia; the faces it was so pleasing to see in the hallway of O ' Hare, or under the archway of the library, or on the staircase of Ochre Court. Perhaps the best summation of our time here comes from Karen Novak. We have included excerpts from her very relevant and well-received Valedictory Address. To all of you, hail and farewell. Not necessarily for your successes, but for your EFFORTS, I strew laurel at your feet. Martha Wolf Sister Jean Sister Eloise Bfrinpf A; l ■' ' M 1 n- ■H B ' IS! 1 .( -, 1 m ' ' ' ' ' ' 1 ' V L - j J Some men are bound together merely by their dreams, their schemes, their platforms, or their philosophies. Some share only a common past or are able to exper- ience only today together. But we, my friends, are bound by more than this, as we have given, one to the other, a part of who we are and hope to become. M. ILEANA SEANDER TO WEIGH AND TO CONSIDER v ' i • t. I J J I3ruj 1 1 VALEDICTORY ADDRESS By Karen Lynn Novak What was our education here really all about? Some words by Sir Francis Bacon might help us answer this question. The sixteenth century scientist once said: Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe on take for granted, but to WEIGH and to CON- SIDER. To weigh and to consider - and especially to question; not only what we have read, but also what we have heard and experienced throughout our years of higher educa- tion. Our initial experience in college, surrounded by a com- bination of anxiety and fear - a fear of something new - seems to leave only a small margin of freedom for ques- tioning what we encounter. For some of us, this first step in learning to question took time. Hopefully, we all ar- rived at the point where our curiosity and our intelli- gent questioning overcame the fear of something new. And the steps we followed were the outline of our learn- ing and growing process. The guidelines for learning for the present, came from our past — our parents, our faculty and our peers. One of the most important guidelines that we had was each other. We helped each other through . . mid-terms, fi- nals, and lab practicals, i.e., Mrs. Bones, formaldehyde and cats! Through research and term papers, with all night typing marathons and a pink and white box of Dunkin 1 Donuts, we kept our blood sugar, as well as our grades, in the passing .one. Some of us went through French Novels and Dr. Vazquez - Buenos Dias, Buenas Tardes, Buenas Noches, (hree limes a week until we were fluent. After Dream Symbolism, we occasionally prac- ticed day dreaming. Physics and the ever injurious sub- ject of electricity, with its own built-in factor of resis- tance, sometimes generated a current of consideration for class cutting, especially on Friday afternoons. And who could forget Chemistry, organic and otherwise, or Dr. DiPippo ' s clear as mud sessions? Fin never gon- na pass this test! Thinking back and reflecting on our times spent here at Salve Rcgina College, it is an exhilarating feeling to rea- lize that we have finally made it! There were numerous good times shared by administration, faculty, parents and students. Such occasions and events as Parents ' Weekend, Student-Faculty sporting events, campus pic- nics, sports banquets and the festivities of Holly Dinner and candle lighting ceremonies all hold memories. There was progress made, and changes took place while we were here. But perhaps the greatest progress and change that occurred was both within and among us all as individuals. Our time spent here and the experience we have acquired will never be duplicated. . ' « I K ■ ' .. DEGREE RECIPIENTS 1978 C . .
