Text from Pages 1 - 168 of the 1977 volume:

■ ; ' y — • ■ THE CIRCLE GAME by Joni Mitchell Yesterday a child came out to wonder, Caught a dragon fly inside a jar. Fearful when the sky was full of thunder, And tearful at the falling of a star. And the seasons, they go ' round and ' round And the painted ponies go up and down. We ' re captive on the carousel of time. We can ' t return, we can only look behind From where we came and go ' round And ' round and ' round in the circle game. Then the child moved ten times ' Round the seasons, Skated over ten clear frozen streams. Words like, when you ' re older Must appease him, and promises of Someday make his dreams. Sixteen springs and sixteen summers Gone now. Cartwheels turn to carwheels Thru the town, And they tell him, ' Take your time; it won ' t be long now, Till you drag your feet to Slow the circles down. So the years spin by And now the boy is twenty. Dreams have lost some grandeur, Coming true, There ' ll be new dreams, Maybe better dreams, and plenty Before the last revolving year is through. ©1966 SIQUOMB PUBLISHING CORP. Used by Permission. Real friends are those who, when you ' ve made a fool of yourself, don ' t feel that you ' ve done a permanent job. Friendship is to be purchased only by friendship. A friend is a person with whom you dare to be yourself. A friend is one who knows all about you and still likes you. A friend is a present you give yourself. Friends are made by many acts--and lost by only one. A friend is one who comes to you when all others leave. 101 Sumbtb upon rnci hand. . 1 one f m xer Waldo a. rind, carvid fyold and Silver memories. tu ice 4+rncd he Circle of -the 3C senS t iwo ucdj- turned ihio circle- amiat a $ +$ of- people -i joo jtdjt hUd wi-Hiin moments of evolution - Un ravelind of sc If. frierd, noao -found s anvboJi upon my hand. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career; however humble, it is a real profession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Expecially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive of Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soil. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is s till a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. Max Ehrmann 160 ' - ■fc- - -
