Regina Maris SALVE REGINA COLLEGE OCHRE POINT AVENUE 1967 NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND SELF EXPANSION CREATES STABIL- ITY IN AN EVER-CHANGING WORLD. CERTAINLY THE THEME OF THE 1967 REGINA MARIS IS A MOST SIGNIFICANT APPROACH TO THE TWENTIETH YEAR OF OUR COLLEGE. THERE HAS BEEN A STEADY, UNREMITTING, AND UN- ENDING DEDICATION WHICH HAS MOULDED THE PATTERN AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRESS MEASURED BY THE PASSING OF TIME. To Live With The Complexity Of Sudden Change 3 To Tolerate WE ARE THE INHERITORS OF A REVOLUTION. THE SPEED OF CHANGE IN OUR TIMES IS RIVALLING THE SPEED OF LIGHT. THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND EDUCATION MOVES ONWARD AT EACH SUNSET. EACH NEW DAWN AWAKENS IN US A NEW HOPE. EACH NEW HOPE CREATES A NEW DREAM. EACH NEW DREAM PRESENTS A NEW REALITY. IN EACH NEW REALITY WE FIND STABILITY, AND IN OUR STABILITY WE FIND THE SEEDS OF FURTHER EXPANSION. OUR UNIVERSE IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING. AND WE, AS VITAL PARTS OF OUR UNIVERSE, WITNESS THIS CHANGE WITH RENEWED VIGOR. FROM THIS RENEWAL WE GAIN A NEW PERSPECTIVE, AND FROM THIS NEW PERSPECTIVE WE FIND THE IMPETUS FOR INDIVIDUAL CHANGE. IT IS IN THIS REALM THAT THE TRUE PROGRESSION OF OUR WORLD FINDS ITS BASIS. AN EMPHASIS ON INDIVIDUALITY FOSTERS SELF-UNDERSTANDING. IT IS FROM SELF-KNOWLEDGE THAT A KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF OTHERS DEVELOPS. IT IS FROM KNOWLEDGE OF OTHERS THAT K NOWLEDGE OF THE VALUE OF OUR SOCIETY GROWS, AND IT IS IN THE REALIZATION OF THE TRUE VALUE OF THE HUMAN PERSON THAT WE ENABLE OURSELVES TO IMPROVE OUR WORLD. WE STAND RENEWED IN THE THRESHOLD OF CHANGE READY TO BECOME ACTIVE CONTRIBUTORS TO OUR WORLD. Ambiguity In Time a and Change tJJ DEDICATION AMIDST THE SHADOW OF OUR WEAKNESS LIES THE SUNSHINE OF OUR STRENGTH. YET VERY OFTEN OUR STRENGTH FLICKERS DIMLY DURING OUR COLLEGE YEARS, AWAITING A NEW SPARK, A NEW VIGOR TO IGNITE OUR HOPES AND AID IN REALIZING OUR DREAMS. IT IS IN YOU, SISTER MARY JEAN, THAT WE HAVE FOUND OUR HOPE. IT IS IN YOUR SELFLESS GIVING AND GENUINE INTEREST THAT OUR DREAMS HAVE BECOME REALITIES. IT IS YOUR PART IN OUR LIVES THAT GIVES US REASON TO SAY, . . . AND THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARK- NESS. IT IS TO YOU, SISTER MARY JEAN, THAT WE, THE SENIOR CLASS, DEDICATE THE 1967 REGINA MARIS. CHANGING SCENES t EACH OF OUR COLLEGE YEARS FINDS FULFILL- MENT OF DREAMS AND MAKING OF ABUNDANT MEMORIES. TIME GOES BY WITH BREATHTAKING SPEED. NEW WORLDS OPEN TO US; WE MAKE NEW FRIENDS; WE CHERISH THE OLD. AND IN THIS PASSING OF TIME WE EXPERIENCE CHANGE- WITHIN OURSELVES AND WITHIN OUR COLLEGE. AS THE HOURS RUN FROM DAWN TO SET OF SUN ACROSS OUR YEARS, IT BRINGS AWARENESS. YOUTH ' S INNOCENCE REPLACED BY TRUTH GIVES LIFE A NEW PERSPECTIVE. IT IS IN THE RECOGNI- TION OF THIS SELF-EXPANSION THAT WE DEVELOP A FAITH FIRM AND ALIVE TO TRUTH AND A REALI- ZATION THAT WE, AS SALVE REGINA GRADUATES, WILL FIND A CERTAIN MATURITY AND STABILITY WITHIN OUR EVER CHANGING WORLD. DESPITE MUTABILITY, A QUEST FOR WISDOM, A DISCOVERY OF TRUTH, AND A CREATION OF CONCEPTS REMAIN THE PRIMARY COMMITMENT OF THE STUDENT AND THE CHRISTIAN WOMAN. TIME PASSES SEEMINGLY UNTOUCHED AS WE CLIMB STEADFASTLY TOWARD ACHIEVEMENT. THIS IS THE YEAR TO SET SIGHTS AND TO EMBARK ON A CAREER. COLLEGE IS MORE PAST NOW THAN FUTURE. THE PRESENT IS MORE PRECIOUS THAN EVER BEFORE. EVERY STEP REQUIRES THOUGHT; EVERY WORD A HESITATION. ENJOY IT, PROFIT Y IT, PONDER IT, AND END IT WITH A MARK- THAT OF DISTINCTION. 1 2 Self-Expansion Creates Stability IN THE DYNAMIC WORLD IN WHICH WE ARE NOW LIVING, WHERE COLD WAR TENSIONS AND GOVERNMENT POLICIES HAVE BECOME THE CONCERN OF ALL, THE NEED FOR KNOWLEDGE AND HUMAN UN- DERSTANDING HAS NEVER BEEN MORE GREATLY FELT. 1 £t MU. ■f c% l ., • ■-:£■' In An Ever ►■r UV ' • $ ' !? •7 r Changing World OUR ERA IS ONE OF CONFLICTING DEMANDS. SOCIETY INSISTS THAT MAN GROUP HIS IDEAS, HIS AMBI- TIONS, HIS DESIRES IN POLITICAL, RELIGIOUS, ECONOMIC, AND SOCIAL ORGANIZATION TO FACILITATE PROG- RESS, HARMONY, AND UNITY. 13 SIMULTANEOUSLY THERE IS PUBLISHED THE DARE TO BE DIFFERENT. PSYCHOLO- GISTS IMPRESS ON US THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING TRUE TO OURSELVES. THE CHAL- LENGE IS TO ANSWER HONESTLY, ESTAB- LISHING AN INNER ACCORD AND PEACE OF MIND. EDUCATION MUST BE AWARE OF THESE DEMANDS AND THROUGH ITS PROPER MEDIUM PREPARE STUDENTS TO ADAPT THEIR ROLES AS INDIVIDUALS LIV- ING IN A HIGHLY ORGANIZED WORLD WHERE TEAM SPIRIT AND TOGETHER- NESS HAVE THREATENED TO STAMP OUT ANY SPARK OF INDEPENDENT THOUGHT, ACTION, OR INQUIRY. YET IT IS THROUGH THIS TOGETHERNESS, THROUGH EXPE- RIENCING LIFE ' S JOYS AND SORROWS WITH OTHERS THAT WE COME TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND OTHERS. IT IS IN TRULY EVALUATING AND APPRECIATING OTHERS THAT WE FOSTER SELF-KNOWLEDGE AND SELF-UNDERSTANDING— THE KEY TO DE- VELOPING AN INDIVIDUALITY SO VITAL IN MEETING THE CHALLENGE OF A MODERN WORLD. SOCIALLY, SPIRITEDLY WE SEEK THE MEANS TO THE AIM OF INTEGRATION OF SELF WITH OTHERS. SUCCESS IS THE PERCEPTION OF INDE- PENDENCE AND INTERDEPENDENCE. COL- LEGE IS THE PATHWAY WHICH FOSTERS QUALITIES ELEMENTARY TO COHESION OF THE ONE WITH SOCIETY. OUR YEARS AT SALVE HAVE AFFORDED US THIS OPPOR- TUNITY; IT IS OURS TO MEET THE CHAL- LENGE. . . . mk ' t  ' ; ■•• L 4 r - T 17 FOUNDED ON ENTHUSIASM, COHESION BUILDS WITH COOPERATIVE, PERSEVERENT, DEPENDABLE INVOLVEMENT. REQUIRING PATIENCE IT RETURNS FULFILLMENT, POSSESSION, SACRIFICE; IT RE- TURNS JOY. INITIALLY DISJOINTED, THIS BODY IS FINALLY CONSOLIDATED THROUGH THE LABORS OF EACH WHO LIVES NOT ALOOFLY, BUT CONTIGUOUSLY, WHO ENJOYS NOT SELF-1NTERESTEDLY BUT BE- NEVOLENTLY, WHO DEMANDS NOT SHORTSIGHT- EDLY BUT WITH DISCRETION. CONCURRENT WITH THE GROWTH OF SOCIAL STRENGTH IS THE AUG- MENTATION OF PERSONAL VITALITY. 19 FOR A WHOLE TO BELIEVE, TO TRUST, AND TO CHERISH ITS PARTS, IT MUST HAVE FAITH, HOPE, AND DEVOTION. RULED BY WISDOM AND JUSTICE UNDER THE CHARM OF A GOTHIC SETTING AS ONE, THE MANY MEET TO WORK, AND LAUGH, AND PRAY. THE GOLDEN HOURS WITHIN THESE WALLS IMMEASURABLE BY CLOCK OR CALENDAR ARE BUT A THRESHOLD TO OUR FUTURE. DUE TO THE CULMINATION OF ACA- DEMIC, SOCIAL, AND RELIGIOUS INTENT, WE REACH AN OPEN DOOR; WE ARE NOW READY TO EMBARK UPON A LIFE OF LOVE, SACRIFICE, AND DEDICATION. 21 1 m . ' -■4 23 OUR SEARCH FOR THE ULTIMATE FOSTERS INTERPRETA- TION, ANALYSIS AND UNDERSTANDING. AS SENIORS WE ARE EAGER FOR THE CHALLENGE, SEEKING TRUTH, RENEWING, MOLDING, ENRICHING OUR COLLEGE YEARS IN LIVING WITH AND LOVING OTHERS. EACH STEP OF THE WAY CLARI- FIES SOME OF LIFE ' S MYSTERIES. EACH DAY BRINGS WITH IT A NEW VISION, A NEW HOPE. EACH HOUR, NEW DISCERN- MENT. EACH MOMENT, WE LEARN TO LIVE LIFE AT ITS FULLEST. BE A WOMAN, A FRIEND, A PRAYERFUL PENITENT, ONE WITH A PROBLEM, AN INDIVIDUAL, A PERSON WHILE LAUGHING AT A DANCE, IN SILENCE, PRESSING AN ORCHID, CLUTCHING A DIPLOMA. IN THIS ENDLESS PLAN, TIME STOPS THE MOVEMENT OF THE CLOCK AND FOR ONE DATELESS HOUR BIDS ME . . . REMEMBER. « in 25 ACCOMPLISHMENT BRINGS UNIFIED VITALITY AND PER- SONAL SERENITY. A LULL . . . THE CRESCENDOING ACTIVITY OF BUSY SCHEDULES TEMPORARILY CULMINATES IN SI- LENCE. WE RETREAT INTO THE INFINITY OF OUR SOULS WHERE THERE IS NO TIME. OUR AWARENESS OF GOD IS INCREASED THROUGH A RE-EMPHASIS OF HIS PRESENCE. AFTER MEDITATION, OUR RENEWED PERSPECTIVE POINTS CHAOS INTO DIRECTION AND SOON OUR COUNTED EXIST- ENCE BEGINS AGAIN WITH FAITH, HOPE, AND DEVOTION. 27 Time Hath a Taming Hand 29 J7  ' iWiilltllliiir mKKKKKKammmmmmmmm h.a .1 -- l!illll)lllllll!llli!liu.. FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION 6 6 bJ ■z THE MOMENT IS OURS . . . GIVEN SIGNIFICANCE BY THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE REGULATED OUR UNSTEADY COUNT INTO A RHYTHMIC BEAT. THEIR FUNDAMENTAL WORDS PERVADE OUR THOUGHTS AND ATTAIN GREATER VALUE IN THEIR IMPLICATIONS. THE WISDOM THEY IMPART EN- LIGHTENS OUR PRIVATE INTERESTS AND EN- DEAVORS WITH THE GLOW OF UNDERSTANDING. NOT ONE BUT ALL HAVE EXERTED THE EFFORT TO INSTILL IN US THE SPIRIT OF KNOWLEDGE, WITH THEIR PATIENCE, CONCERN AND GUIDING HANDS ... IN THIS THEIR TIME TO ACT AND SERVE THE FUTURE HOUR. SELFLESSNESS IS INVARIABLY A MATTER OF POLICY WHICH WE EXPERIENCE FROM EACH MEMBER OF OUR ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY. THEY HAVE SHOWN US THAT PURSUIT OF LOVE AND WISDOM QUICKENS MAN ' S MIND TO GRASP A SYSTEMATIC ORDERING OF HIS KNOWL- EDGE AND OF THE ACTIVITY TO PLACE A GIVEN OBJECT IN ITS PROPER PERSPECTIVE. THEY HAVE AIDED US IN GRASPING THE IDEAS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THE COMPLETE DEVELOPMENT OF A CHRISTIAN WOMAN. WE HAVE BEEN GUIDED TO DO MORE THAN DIRECT OUR INTELLECT TOWARD ONE ISOLATED GOAL; WE HAVE BEEN STIMULATED TO A PURSUIT OF INTELLECTUAL HONESTY, TO A LOVE OF TRUTH AND AN INCREASE IN OUR ABILITY TO THINK CLEARLY IN ALL FIELDS OF ENDEAVOR. i-_-«_ . — i— ™ In The Light of Vatican Most Reverend Russell J. IT IS THE SPIRIT OF SALVE REGINA CON- VEYING A GENUINE INTEREST IN HER STUDENTS THAT BREEDS INTEREST AND ENTHUSIASM FOR STUDENT ACTIVITY. INVOLVEMENT IS AN EXTEN- SION OF ACADEMIC ENDEAVOR. LEARNING PRE- SUPPOSES FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND SPARKS CONTINUED EFFORTS FOR THE ATTAINMENT OF EXCELLENCE. EXCELLENCE IS ATTAINED THROUGH SELF-EXPANSION. COLLEGE LIFE OPENS MANY AVENUES FOR ENRICHMENT. FROM AN ENCOUNTERING OF MINDS, ONE DE- RIVES FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. FREEDOM OF THOUGHT AND EX- PRESSION CREATES A NEED FOR EVALUATION OF SELF AND FROM THIS EVOLVES A DESIRE FOR EVALUATION OF CONCEPTS, IDEAS, AND SITUA- TIONS. IT IS IN LEARNING TO THINK CLEARLY AND TO EVALUATE WITH DISCRETION THAT AN ALERT AND RESPONSIVE MIND IS FORMED. EXTRA-CUR- RICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE A SPRINGBOARD FOR NEW INTERESTS AND IDEAS. STUDENT-SPONSORED ACTIVITIES FOSTER STUDENT INITIATIVE AND DEDICATION. STUDENT LEADERSHIP EMERGES AND FROM THIS ONE DEVELOPS POISE, RESPONSIBILITY, AND CONSIDERATION FOR OTHERS. CLUB ACTIVI- TIES ARE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PARTICIPATION, INVOLVEMENT, AND COMMITMENT. MORE IMPORTANTLY COLLEGE LIFE INVOLVES A CONSTANT AND WHOLESOME EMPHASIS ON CUL- TURE AND VERSATILITY. AND IT IS IN LIVING WITH OTHERS THAT WE DEVELOP UNDERSTANDING, CONSIDERATION AND APPRECIATION OF OTHERS, WHICH ARE VITAL TO A CHALLENGING AND EVER-CHANGING WORLD. Student Council The weekly Student Council meeting affords the students of Salve time to express and discuss their ideas regarding student gov- ernment.
