In its formation it demands disciplined work, the courage to meet obstacles, the perseverance to see spar and wall and rafter exactly measured and firmly fixed in place. As we watch Miley Hall extend its height and breadth against a setting sun — a silhouette in progress — we are conscious that in our growth as college students there is also a need for intelligence, determination, patience and enthusiasm. The Regina Maris of 1964 endeavors to illustrate both the one and the other. May you find in these pages the story of each. For it is in both that Salve Regina finds its meaning and its existence. Dedication We are God ' s building, and in the making, we owe much to those who, under God, have planned, and worked upon and shaped the blueprint of our lives. Little by little, day by day, year by year, the structure of our lives became enriched and endowed with deeper meaning and fresher experiences. The cherished beginnings of childhood, the enthusiastic aspirations of youth and the more serious endeavors of young woman- hood find their cornerstone in you, our parents. From you we have learned the meaning of good example. In you We have witnessed the spirit of generosity, a generosity founded on faith in us and in an abid- ing love for us. In the light of all that you are and ever will be to us, We dedicate this Regina Maris of 1964 fo you, dear parents, with love. Father ' s Council Among the many functions of the Father ' s Council is the promotion of father - daughter understanding. An aid to this is the annual Father- Daughter Weekend, which is being planned here. There ' s a new building going up. Mr. Edmund Tobin has prepared a detailed resume of past and future progress, and the meeting is now open to suggestions from the fathers. Mother ' s Guild Board members of the Mothers ' Guild gather informally in the green room of Ochre Court as Mrs. Edward Walsh calls for suggestions for their 1964 huffet luncheon. Mrs. Edward Walsh, loyal and en- thusiastic President of the Mothers ' Guild, confers with her committee. Last-minute plans are being drawn for the annual tea sponsored by the Guild. Scenes such as this, taken in Newport last summer, give reason for the lasting affection we all feel for the late President John F. Kennedy and his wife. The student body of Salve Regina paid tribute to the late President through its prayerful offering of the Memorial Mass celebrated on November 25. 1963. jn (f lemoriarcL John Fitzgerald Kennedy 1917 - 1963 photograph by JOHN HOPF, Newport X 10 One of the truly beautiful night- time scenes in Newport is the radiantly lighted steeple of Trin- ity Church. 4 The Americans Cup Race, one of the high spots of Newport ' s ac- tivities, attracts spectators from around the world. The oldest functioning library in America, Redwood Library, proves invaluable when term papers are due. At last! Signs of progress are appearing on the site of the new dormitory and student center. With luck it may even be completed on schedule. MeXvport Scenes , : ... j$A fp ; ™ i J) J W - 1 I n 3 .! Ai faculty Like the rise and fall of the sea, constant, recurring, unremitting, so is the dedication of the teacher. In the daily and hourly encounter with other minds there is a communication of ideas, a fashioning of values, a directing of purposeful activity — in a word, the building of a spiritual edifice which lifts its towers beyond space and time and finds its com- pletion in eternity. This is a temple not built with hands but molded and shaped by the influence now gentle, now firm, of those who find in such a profession God ' s imprint, God ' s approbation, and God ' s blessing. At left, MOST REVEREND RUSSELL J. McVINNEY. D.D. Mother Mary Helena, Mother Provincial, keeps a beneficent eye on Salve ' s progress. Sister Mary Hilda, College President, pauses to offer encour- agement to worried students. Sister Mary Rosalia, Dean of Studies, is happy to discover that it is possible for some girls to make the Dean ' s List. Why don ' t you have your schedule yet? demands a harried Sister Mary Martina. College Registrar. Sister Mary Donald, Dean of Women, checks her black list before granting a weekend permission. Administration Sister Mary Emily proves her point — White Holm was an example of Spanish architecture according to the picture in the archives. Sisfer Mary Clarice knows from experience that if a book is not in the library Sister Mary Hilda probably has a good substitute. Sister Marie Therese and Mrs. Lynch check and re-check new books in order to maintain the lofty standards of the library. The business office deals with many kinds of greens, and Sister Mary Venard assures their continued growth. 15 Faculty THEOLOGY AND PHILOSOPHY Sister Mary Eloise, in deep philosophical discussion with Mr. Hugh Kilmer, adds parenthetically, But Descartes is so silly! Now on the other hand, Thomas Aquinas . . . When not engrossed in theological and philosophical problems. Father John Egan takes pleasure in expatiating on the subject of his favorite painter, Rouault. From the various expressions on the faces of these students, one would gather that Father Paul Curran has presented them with a somewhat amusing, if totally baffling, metaphysical principle. SOCIAL SCIENCES History is not something dead — it lives and is shaped very day. Sister Mary Harold emphasizes this by means of her bulletin board on current affairs. Sister Mary Christopher and Dr. Gaudreau find sociology ever-intriguing. Its humorous aspects may not strike the harried students quite so forcibly. Sister Mary Antonine goes to the top for information that will help to enlighten her students on historical situations. HUMANITIES A seminar in French demands much work, especially with Sister Mary Jeremy in charge. A light moment comes as she inserts an amusing anecdote. Dr. Paul van K. Thomson receives helpful hints on the abilities of the English majors from Sister Mary Jean. Mrs. Georgette Ramos sits with an air of amusement before giving her final approval to the French Club ' s next project — the production of Racine ' s Athalie. 19 Sister Mary Andrea escapes from the confusion of two ver- sions of Faust — Marlow ' s in English and Goethe ' s in its original German. Dr. Stanley Coicz frequently breaks from his language classes with a trip to the Haven. Coffee and cigarettes seem to replenish the needed energy. Every teacher should express enthusiasm for the courses she teaches. Dr. de la Portilla is always ready with a plentiful supply for her students of Spanish. In a relaxed moment Sister Mary Olga discovers that her fame has spread far and wide — even to the Vernon Court campus. Mr. Jack Stodghill bends his ear in consideration of the mathe- matical aspects of Mr. Leo Bottari ' s latest biological find. Afiss Eileen Flaherty, after a session with her students in advanced math. heads homeward to contemplate her next assignments. NATURAL SCIENCES 21 A chemical reaction is about to take place — a slight mistake, and this may be the last picture taken in the unscorched chem lab. I : ■ Sister Mary Brenda and Sister Mary Philemon interrupt their dreaming over a science equipment catalogue to retort to one of Sister Mary Martina ' s comments. Is a pipe an absolute necessity for men of science? At any rate, it seems to lend a certain elan to Dr. George Morris as be tests comparative chair comfort. Dr. Ascanio DiPippo looks somewhat sceptically at the conglomeration of equipment. It seems that someone failed to clean up the chemistry lab. 22 4 Sister Mary Rosina indulges in a pastime at which she is superb — teaching others to play the piano as well as she does. Now this is art, Sister Mary Mercedes insists, as she acts as guide at the winter exhibition of the Art Club. FINE ARTS C. Alexander Peloquin prepares to depart after another successful concert by the Queen ' s Choristers. His hard work and able directing are the key to the glee club ' s excellence. 23 Sister Mary Joannes and the Home Economics students pick up a few points on the advantages of using a dummy for the design and fabrication of clothes. Mrs. Marion Fletcher, an expert in the field, is teaching. COMMUNITY SERVICE Sister Mary Martha is active in many capacities on campus, but the Mission Club has her heart. How can the last class of the day seem so long when Sister Mary Othilda is able to view the prospect with such enthusiasm ? Mrs. Eleanor McMahon checks the bulletin board to see how many of her student teachers have signed up for their interviews. Now girls, I want you to remember this: a teacher ' s most important role is . . ., Mr. George L. McKim advises. But one cannot overlook the super- ab undance of detailed work involved in practice teaching. It ' s the end of another busy day. and Sister Mary Janice anticipates tbe nice, warm bus ride home — providing the heater is working today. 25 ■« . ' Mrs. Catherine Gratiano checks her book for the schedule of operating techniques. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. NURSING Miss Helen Maloof and Miss Lois Prosser, enroute to a faculty meeting, discuss their course in problems of contemporary society, with particular emphasis on nursing. Mrs. William Lautieri holds the interest of the student nurses in the medical -surgical nursing class. Sister Marilyn makes a notation. The problems of psychiatric nursing are many — the right approach in the right way at the right moment is of utmost importance. Sister Mary Rosarita takes time out to read Time — a pleasant respite from medical-surgical nursing class. The photographer caught Sister Mariella on her way to the four o ' clock bus. Maternal -child health is her concern in the nursing department. ■mi jp Sister Afary Aujusfine, Director of the School of Nursing, checks a card in her files — records must be kept on everything in her department. 27 . v.-. ■; .■ ' . -■,-, H,j£ ! jk. :■ W 9HMl«iyS fir ' v jBa- sr !P V J « v ■ ' ' Zj 2 — Mi i ' ii J SOCIAL GRACES Mrs. Marguerite Murphy takes time out from gym classes to regale Sister Mary Martha with tales of students ' ingenious excuses to get out of physical fitness exercises. Miss Jane Hale explains one of the technicalities of the basket- ball court rules to an indignant player, Barbara Connelly. Speech and drama courses aid in projecting the personality — and Miss Joan David projects! X COLLEGE SERVICE Sister Mary Corona, the epitome of organization and cheerful efficiency, can occasionally be found away from her busy office. As always, the library is a focal point for research and study. Miss Katherine McAvoy checks in Bar- bara ' s overdue books, while Sister Mary Isabel will- ingly searches out reference material. Dr. Kenneth Brasted, as Public Relations Director, promotes a favorable image for Salve. The college has, through his efforts, become newsworthy. 29 J 1 5 35 ' H .M 1 nj H I Social A community of interests, an interchange of wit, or the finesse of rhythm in dance and song — these, too, mold and fashion the edges of personality into a thing of beauty. The beauty of hospitality, the delicate grace of courtesy, the sheer enjoyment of life have their place in gracious living. The blend of the grave and the comic, of the classical and the contemporary lends variety and diversity to social communication. II Penseroso and L ' Allegro merge, each giving to each in an admirable exchange; scholarship and pleasure are truly the measure for cultured living. r Dances How to feel elegant in one easy lesson — descend this staircase in a floor-length gown — and her escort discovers its magic. Sallyann and Kathy call attention to the swan, symbol of the Freshman Court Cotillion. What else could so aptly imply the floating effect of a formal dance? The Great Hall of Ochre Court provides a regal background as our photographer catches these Sophomores in a slow, dreamy number at the annual informal November Nocturne. A time to laugh . . . and a time to dance. ECCLESIASTES 3, 4. The prospective joy of a dancing evening gives these girls a very rosy glow as they are about to welcome their dates at Ochre Court. Mercy Hall has been transformed into an Autumn Fair for the yearbook weekend. Oodie offers refreshment to a thirsty Ginger and John. The band will get here eventually, Sally, with insuperable optimism assures the dubious would- be dancers. Have some cider and doughnuts while you wait. 33 A feeling of elegance, of super-sophistication, pervade the atmosphere of the Sapphire Ball. Stars shine in more than rings tonight, as happy couples glide across the floor. ' All things have their season. ECCLESIASTES 3, V. 1. The dance is about to begin; recorded forever in the guest book is the bare fact that we were there. But oh. what memories lurk behind those names! J S ' ' tfkkj ■ H gttfag-- . y. The longed-for ting is placed on an eager band. This is the reward for work well-done, an incentive for achievement to come. ng T eekend Dancing, dancing and more dancing — energy may flag at other times, but never during a weekend. Would anyone have believed that fathers could dance all night? The pause that refreshes . . appreciate this. Even the most accomplished of dancers After the ball is over . . . Sister Mary Jean gets K-P. 35 mm 4 Jff ' t—f- Clubs Each new day is a treasured time but within its compass are occasions of special moment in the extra- curricular activities which unify our aims. Whether it be a hard-won basketball game or a musical debut at the cathedral, a session with the French Consul or a simple pinata party — each contributes toward growth. The Betty Lamp, the fashion show, the cooking demonstration interest the enthusiastic Home Economists, the Regina Players enthrall the audience, the Art Club exhibits its creations, the Mission Club sends boxes to faraway places. Variety to satisfy every taste. The total effect means much in the structure of student life. The Vernon Court-Salve game got off to a crashing start with a mad scramble for the ball. A tie is almost broken, but careful guarding prevents the last desperate shot of the half from being scored. Daring another athletic bat- tle, the Vernon Court player frantically attempted to re- cover the ball. Her efforts were in vain — we won. 27 to 12. Janet ' s coat gets the attention it well deserves. Betty and Ginny instruct underclassmen on the art of constructing an Advent Wreath. Each year the wreath is solemnly blessed and becomes the center of weekly preparation for Christmas. H ome economics Miss Charmain Robinson from the National Livestock and Meat Board of Chicago illuminates both Home-Ecers and homemakers by her meat demonstration. One of the time-honored traditions at Salve Regina is the Betty Lamp Cere- mony in which the Freshmen are officially inducted into the Home Economics Club. Here, Ann Bruton. president, presides. Meat is a staple at every meal, and the Home Economics majors here learn to be experts in its selection and preparation. The officers of the Home Ec Club, Ann Bruton, Kathy Sheehan and Lenny Anderson, discuss the format of the 1963-64 schedule. 45 Ellen Scully, Student Body President, speaks for the entire college in welcoming the returning senior nurses and student teachers to the campus. As usual she expresses our thoughts with eloquence and sincerity. Student Council ' In the multitude of counsellors there is safety. PROVERBS 11, 14. The culmination of a spirited week of cam- paigning is the voting. Diane, Ellen, Louise and Jane, officers of Student Council, meet frequently with Sis- ter Mary Donald to plan and to com- promise. House Council Tara Davoren, President of the Council, checks the business of the day. Show thyself in all things, an ex- ample in good work, in integrity and dignity. TITUS II, 7. The Freshmen members of House Council discuss ways of improving dorm life at Ochre Court. Lois Scialo, President of McAuley, takes a break from her duties to partake of coffee with dormmate Barbara Connelly. Members of the House Councils of the various dorms gather to promote the J.F.K. Scholarship Fund. 47 The Sociology Club is not all just words. Here they volunteer to work with cerebral palsy vic- tims, putting principle into practice. Art Connie Tobin and Irene Jeuchter, co- chairmen of the Art Exhibit, make sure that all is in order for the opening. Theresa prepares a critical analysis, while Sister Mary Mer- cedes, Lee and Marie-Ann discuss the merits of another still-life. Marie-Ann Silva and Angie Pacheco put the finishing touches on the latest of their numerous artistic creations. The cap and cape symbolize the devotion and patience necessary for a nursing career. At an informal gathering, the senior nursing students de- cide upon the next topic for consideration — shall it be preparation for state boards or a party? Student Nurses Organization Rosemarie Sbona, president of the State Student Nurses Organization, and Joan Reardon, president of Salve ' s branch, correlate material for the next meeting. 53 Queen ' s Players A passport to other times, great events — the program for Royal Gambit. Miss Joan David gives a pep-talk to Kiki and Jackie during dress rehearsal. Jane Seymour and Henry VIII share a dramatic moment at a rehearsal of Royal Gambit presented in December of ' 63 by the Regina Players. Putting out a newspaper is far from easy, especially when perfection is just naturally expected. Typically, the Ebb Tide office is a scene of coffee and confusion. The Business Manager, Janice Motte, makes sure the deadline is met. A general sigh of relief is heard in the office of the Ebb Tide as Jane returns with the essential photos. 57 I ' m getting worried about the deadline, Sister Mary Jean, staff advisor, begins her familiar lament, while Sister Mary Jeremy, also staff advisor, remains optimistically encouraging. Pat Coyle, Business Manager supreme, announce s with authority that we managed to stay out of the red. Watch out, everyone! With Linda Wallace, also Photography Editor, and a camera, no one is quite safe. The staff ' s annual fall meeting with our representative from Cooke had its rare moments. Now we ' ll try it again, says Mr. John Ursprung as he patiently attempts to demonstrate the mechanics of a slide rule to co-editors Sally O ' Brien and Ann Neville. 1964 gina oMaris 59 , intellectual Wisdom has built herself a house — truly a house of the intellect wherein dwells ordered knowledge — the knowledge which leads to wisdom. Theol- ogy reigns therein with her ladies in waiting — phil- osophy, the humanities, the social sciences, the phys- ical sciences and all else which serve to enrich our minds and enlarge our perspective. The process is gradual, the assent difficult, the progress from dark- ness into light, but the final achievement is worth- while. It is only in the end that one realizes fully the pattern and sees the integration. In the end is our beginning — Wisdom ' s house reaches into eternity. ., «  ' ■ Christmas customs do vary; the pinata. analogous to our Christmas stocking, is a focal point at the Spanish Club party. ' Ann and Sue appear to have missed the humor. The Alliance Francaise perpetuates the Epiphany celebration, a somewhat more important feast in France than in America. Sue directs the catting of a decisive portion of French pastry that made her Queen for a day. I IMF R UE DE MONT MARTRE 65 Robert J. The Mercy Shield symbolizes many things, but to the members of Sigma Phi Sigma it is always a reminder of the high honor they received. 68 Philosophy Seminar Sister Mary Eloise leads the class through the maze of dialectics, and succeeds, eventually, in clarifying an obscure point of philosophy. This is the college student who gives of herself — her intel- lect to her studies, her disposition to the art of gracious living, herself to the spirit which leavens the whole. Each contributes to a vital reality which is Salve Regina. Here in these pages one shall see the Freshman standing on the threshold — eager, ex- pectant, hopeful, then the Sophomore who has partaken briefly of the enrichment offered here, finally the Junior who all too soon sees the end in view — the Junior who in the midst of things realizes that it is of herself and from herself that the College receives life. Marianne Cavanaugh looks none too pleased as the vigilantes pass final judgment on her crimes. The vigilantes keep a sharp eye on all the freshmen, and no minor infringement of their rules goes unpunished. Betsy and Valerie discover to their dismay, But I can ' t sing is a pretty poor excuse. 80 freshman Class You ace God ' s tillage; you are God ' s building. CORINTHIANS 3, 9 Some fathers really do sympathize with their daughters. Will these symbols of freshman misfortune bring memories of joy or misery in future years. As the freshmen march skeptically to beanie court, only the omnipotent sophomores know what is in store for them. 81 Well, Sharon thinks, I know what time my history class is, now all I have to do is find it. These witchilantes may never make it to the com- parative safety of the stage. It seems that a sopho- more has discovered them. Ever Eager, Ever Hopeful 82 Emmy-Lou describes her reaction to the sights she saw while visiting Salve ' s campus. A wolf in brass buttons and white hat — who wouldn ' t be stunned? Always Planning, Always Seeking Joyce and Barbara view (with faint enthusiasm) the long hike to classes. Only the ultra-enthusiastic early-birds get parking places nearby. New Adventures Miss Hurst occasionally finds it necessary to remind Mary, Sue and Gail that studying is easier in a neat room. Even the skeleton in the background hides his face in utter dismay as two sophomores pounce upon a lone but gallant freshman. Now that initia- tion is over she can defend herself with vigor. At last the freshmen become formally accepted members of Salve Regina ' s academic life. At investiture, they re- ceive for the first time the cap and gown which symbolize this membership. ► 84 85 I - N a ■E % For car-less freshmen, bicycles provide the only practical means of reaching town — until the snow comes. A chance to test weary feet at the Father-Daughter dance is rare, but greatly appreciated. 87 Pat, to no avail, tries to ignore the discontent- ment of the three poor souls who have been waiting for that all-important phone call. The sophomores, wise fools, live up to their name as they combine work and play. Which predominates? No final session before an exam would be com- plete without coffee, cramming, and cigarettes as Jane, Pauline, and Mary Lou demonstrate. 88 Soph omore Class 7 will build him a faithful house. The Senior must go on build- ing new structures of knowledge, must continue on from the City of Man to the City of God through a lifetime of fashioning ever new experiences into the likeness of the eternal verities. The Senior looks to the future not with an idle mind, not with a timid heart, nor yet with an untrained will. In her rests the destiny of the next generation. From her must come the values, the attitudes, the culture wherewith there will rise a newness of life — a living tribute to her intrepid faith and to her undaunted courage. A.B. On that day its history will begin. On that day it will have achieved its purpose. For us this does not hold true; some work of noble note must yet be done. We are not bound by space, by time or by the limitations of merely human perspective. Our fruition lies not within the City of Man but within the City of God wherein We shall find within Our Father ' s House an eternal habitation. It is there that we shall reach the ultimate goal of what here and now we seek. It is only there that these college years will come full circle. It is only there that we shall attain the fullness of life. 150 College Directory CLASS OF 19 64 RITA A. ANDERSON 1 Charming Place, Newport, R. I.
