The Freshman Spelling Bee was an exciting one this year. Phyllis Cordera appears to be the winner, but was she really? No. Tim Nanneman was number one. Activities Momecomincf Homecoming Week’s activities were kicked off with Monday dedicated as Hat and Sock Day. Tuesday followed with Graffiti Shirt Day. and that evening the Powder Puff Football Game was played. The Junior and Senior girls downed the Freshmen and Sophomore girls with a score of 27-0. Jim Fitzgerald was crowned Ugly Duckling King at half-time by popular vote. Wednesday was proclaimed Hush Button Day. A prize was given to the boy that received the most buttons from girls who talked to them. Thursday was Hobo Day. Everybody let himself go in all k’nds of get up. The bonfire and pep rally was held that evening. A coyote was burned and the victory spirit rose for the big game the next evening. Friday, everybody wore purple and gold to honor our school colors. That evening was the football game. Even though we didn’t win, it was a great game. The final event for the week was the dance after the game which was a perfect end to a memorable week. 18 19 Jiomecominy First Place Float (Seniors) . The Salisbury FFA Chapter started its annual Barnwarming at 6:30 with a weiner roast for all members and guests. Everyone then entered the hay tunnel to get inside the building for the start of games and square dancing. The games started with a list of words to be unscrambled, followed by a Pie Eating Contest, the Nail Driving Contest for both girls and guys. The Pudding Feeding Contest terminated the games. The caller started the dancing by making sure everyone knew how to square dance. After everyone got started, they danced for about two hours before halting temporarily for the crowning of the King and Queen. Stacy Kottman and Pam Henke, and for refreshments. They resumed dancing for another hour before retiring from an exciting and memorable Barnwarming. They kicked off the year with a watermelon feed which was to encourage new members to join the club. The next activity was the selling of cheese for a money - making project. The members went caroling at Christmas and served as hostess at the Community Center. To view new trends in Home Economics, a trip was taken to the Home Show at Kansas City. The annual Mother • Daughter Banquet was held at 7:00 p.m., April 19. Bart Entrichan, a counciler at Camp Wonderland, was the guest speaker. Summers To start the year off. NHS entered an old-time car in the Homecoming Parade, and on November 20 they held a bake sale to help meet expenses. As a community service project a few members of NHS went to Chariton Manor and sang Christmas carols and gave a thought abour Christmas. This year they undertook a major project, to start an American Field Service Chapter in SHS. AFS is an organization which brings foreign students to school in the U.S. Hopefully, by next year SHS will be hosting a student! February 18 a special visitor was roaming the halls of SHS. The annual citrus fruit sales of December made the chapter 1600 dollars plus. The Barnwarming royalty were Stacy Kottman. King; and Pam Henke. Queen. During National FFA Week (Feb. 19-25), the chapter played basketball against the Young Farmers and sponsored a sausage and pancake breakfast for businessmen and school administration among other activities. FFA teams went to state contests April 21-22. The chapter elected five state farmers; Martin Leatherwood. John Gebhardt. Dennis Pegelow. Mark Kottman and Stacy Kottman. now State Secretary. The Future Homemakers of America began their year with their annual cheese sales. In December, the FHA went Christmas caroling. The 50’s Dance was sponsored in February. The Secret Grandmother’s Tea on April 28 ended their year. The Future Business Leaders of America joined the FFA and the FHA Thursday. March 17, to go roller skating in Moberly. Before that, on March 16. the FBLA visited the MFA in Columbia. On April 17. the FBLA sponsored a walk-a-thon for the March of Dimes. Los Amigos Espanoles, the Spanish club, went to a Mexican dinner in Columbia at La Casa de Montez in November. During National Language Week, the Spanish club visited the Junior High, the public grade school, and the St. Joseph Grade School to share some Spanish with them. The Spanish Assembly was held the following week. The Art Club sponsored a bake sale which made community and student art shows possible The Drama Club hosted an oral interpretation festival. THE EDUCATION OF HEIMAN KAPLAN was the fall play. THE CLOWN THAT RAN AWAY and THE CAT PRINCESS were two children’s plays presented on April 14 and 15. The Library Club went roller skating in Moberly and visited the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri. They worked the concession stands during the Girl’s Softball games and they also purchased books for the library with money collected from overdue books. The Marching and Concert Band has had a prosperous year. The Marching Band performed at half time for all of the home football games. The instruments gleamed across the field as the lights reflected on them. Once inside, the mood was changed completely and hard work began to prepare for contest.
