on individuals of our class, First prize was awarded to Sinclair Cottman and Ruth Collins for being best dancers, Anita Stewart was awarded first prize in the Battle of Words contest, Now it so happened at the beginning of the third year, we found ourselves divided, and our homeroom teachers spake unto us, saying: Go gather ye in a body, and organ- ize yourselves into a class, that ye may gain in strength, and that your courage may long endure, And as they spake unto us, so was it done, and we chose our wisest ones to be our leaders, Among these were; Anita Stewart, President; Shirley Handy, Vice President; and Martha Goslee, Secretary. And it came to pass, in the same year, that the class was found in much sorrow, for it was here that we lost one of our dearly beloved classmates, Martha Ellen Goslee, who was a great success in all of her doings, Because God thought that it was best, he called her fromm all the rest, We then bade her farewell, and sorrowfully passed on our way without her, Now in the same year Doris Elsey was awarded first prize in an essay contest, Car- lotta Robinson a nd Peggy Nutter participated in singing in the Maryland All-State Cho- rus, And lo, the whole number at the end of the third year was 86, Now this, the fourth year in the history of this great prodigious class of 1955-56, has been one of much hard labor; but little resting by the wayside; for preparations were being made ready for the final departure from school, So far many activities were sponsored as the crowning of Alfreda Handy for Miss Salisbury High. The runners up were Carlotta Robinson, Anita Stewart, Shelby Jones, and Peggy Nutter, The football team was not complete without the ardent zeal of Donald Toadvine and George Adkins, There were other activities, however, we will not be able to mention, Now the curtains are slowly closing, and this means a great deal to us, for we shall always be trying to reach the top, but we must still remember like the poet says, Heaven is not reached by a single bound, but we build the ladder by which we rise, from the lowly earth to the vaulted skies, and mount each summit round by round,

THE CLASS HISTORY Now the history of 1955-56, of the Salisbury High School of the City of Salisbury, County of Wicomico, State of Maryland, is in this wise; In the beginning, in the two - and fiftieth year of our Lord, in the ninth month, and on the sixth day of the month, there entered into this land of learning about 138 seekers of knowledge, Some came up from various school, where they had for many years been busily engaged in storing their minds with the honey of wisdom; some came from farms, where they had been tillers of the soil; and some were from other com munities, And it came to pass, as they did enter this land, that they were received with wel- comings and rejoicings by those who were of higher grades, Likewise it came to pass also that they were received with glee by a certain land of beings who were called Sophomores who caused them to say in their hearts, Be- hold, blessed be the name of education, for because of it we have endured many and great torments, both of the body and mind; verily have we been martyrs to its great and noble cause! And as they each dwelt long in the land, they fell in with the customs of the in- habitants thereof, and their strangeness wore away, and they each became as one among the rest, Now it came to pass, soon after they entered that land, that certain students were seized with a strange infirmity. Wise men were called to look upon them, who did examine them with much care and pains, and did finally pronounce the infirmity in the male basketball and football, The greatest victims among these were Donald Toadvine and George Adkins, The infirmity in the female was field ball and basketball, and the greatest among these were Doris Elsey and Ruth White, The frightened leaders were assured that the malady while its needs must be contagious, and likewise sometimes fatal, was yet a necessary evil, and one that even the wisemen knew not the way to cure, So, with many anxious fears, and dire forebodings did the instructors allow the disease to run its natural course, and lo, none was killed, nor injured, whereas there was great rejoicing throughout the land, And it came to pass, as the years quickly passed by that our eyes were turning toward graduation, but many, with one consent, began to make excuses, The first said, I am poor in health; therefore, I cannot graduate, Another said, I must toil at home; therefore, I cannot graduate, A third said, I am dull and cannot learn: J pray thee have me excused, And still another said, I am going to be married, and therefore I need not gradu- ate. So the class decreased in number, Now it came to pass at the beginning of the year, we had accomplished much by participating in various programs and contest, and singulars honors had been conferred
