S EE ' Fooltlballl Summary Salina 28 Belleville 6 Opening the 1934 football season, the Maroons played a dedication game on the new athletic field in which they downed the Belle- ville eleven 28-6. This victory proved to the Salina fans that the team would stand watching. Long runs by Boydston and line plunges by Buell were largely responsible for the win. The Maroons scored in every quarter with Belleville getting their tally in the first. Salina 0 Topeka 14 After traveling to Topeka and lying over a day because of bad weather, the Maroons lost to a powerful Trojan club 14-0. The more experienced Topeka team scored touchdowns in the second and the fourth quarters and a safety in the third. At no time during the game did Salina threaten to score. It was in this game that Brown received a knee injury, which kept him out of several games. Salina 26 McPherson 0 Following the Topeka loss, the Maroons invaded the home of the Bull Pups, where they won their first C. K. L. game 26-O. Touch- downs were contributed by Yordy, Buell, Magerkurth, and Boydston, with Van Cleef adding two extra points. During the game Salina collected 217 yards from scrimmage while they held the Pups down to 18. Up until the third quarter when Coach Douglass sent in his reserves the Bull Pups had tried only three plays from scrimmageg every other time they were forced to punt. Salina 19 Concordia 7 Again meeting a team from the North Central Kansas League, the Maroons won another decisive victory from the Concordia High Cardinals. Boydston scored first, going over on a short plunge. The attempt for ex- tra point was good. Boydston scored again in the third quarter, going over from the 12-yard stripe. The try for extra point was unsuc- cessful. A pass from Boydston to Heath was good for the third and final touchdown of the game. Once more the try for extra point failed. Salina 32 Herington 0 The Maroons met the defending champion on the University Field this year and gave it one of the worst defeats it had suffered for a long time. The Maroons tallied twice in the first quarter and three times in the second half. The touchdowns were made by Magerkurth, Cassell, Heath, and Boydston. Van Cleef made two extra points good. In the second quarter Herington opened up with passes, using the Wald-Meier combination. They completed few of these, however, owing to the fine defensive work of the Maroon backfield. Salina 14 Abilene 0 Meeting Abilene in mid-season instead of during Thanksgiving week as usual, the Maroons staged a last half rally to defeat the Cowboys. Outplayed in the first half, the Maroons came back the second half to score in the third and the fourth quarters. Boydston scored in the third, going over from the seven- yard line. In the last of the third, Buell ran 36 yards on an attempted punt. Boydston made 20 on an attempted pass, and on Abilene's seven-yard line the Maroons were held for downs. A pass, Boydston to Jared, made the last touchdown. Van Cleef added both points. EARL VAN CLEEF-TACKLE, SENIOR Van concluded a successful football career with the Maroons, having been named on the C. K. L. All-Stars twice. He was a hard tackler and was perhaps the most valuable player on the team. He was also the team's place-kicker. Van was elected honorary captain for the year by his teammates. LEONARD FRIEDSON-GUARD, SOPHOMORE. Through a display of great ability on de- fensive work, Friedson moved to a first- team berth after the season Was well un- der way. Leonard used his 165 pounds of speed to great advantage in teaming with the other linemen, and is due to prove a Valuable cog of Maroon elevens in his two remaining years of competition. E JACK GLAZIER-TACKLE, SENIOR. Jack teamed with Van to make one of the finest pair of tackles the C. K. L. has seen in many a year. Playing his second year as a regular, Jack proved to be a bat- tering-ram to his opponents. He was chosen to fill one of the tackle positions on the C. K. L. All-Star team. BOB BAYS-GUARD, SENIOR. Early in the season Bob was shifted from end to guard to strengthen the middle of the line. Bay's stellar play in the Mc- Pherson game was largely responsible for the Maroon victory over the Canine. ROY HEATH-ENDg-SENIOR. ' By receiving a position on the All-C. K. L. second team, Heath showed he deserved the end-berth that he took over after an early season injury suffered by Brown. On end reverse plays and long passes, Roy accounted for large gains in crucial mo- ments of play, and his speed on the de- fense enabledu him to break up many of the opponents rushes. JERRY AHLSTEDT-CENTER, SENIOR. Two hundred and fifteen pounds of beef and bone made Jerry one of the best cen- ters in the league. As a result, he was given the center berth on the second All- C. K. L. team. LOUIS JARED-END, SENIOR. Louie's ability to get down under punts and pick passes out of the air made him a valuable cog in the Maroon machine. His strong defense Work in teaming with Heath furnished the home eleven with an effective end department.i HARTZELL BOYDSTON-HALFBACK, JUNIOR. Playing his second year as a regular, Hartz starred on the gridiron with his uncanny ball-lugging ability. Living up to his name snake-hips , Boydston was poison to the opponents' defense. WAYNE YORDY-QUARTERBACK, SENIOR When it came to assigning the signal-call- 'ing post, there was no doubt in 'Coach Douglass's mind as to who should get the job. 4563 GEORGE BUELL-HALFBACK, SENIOR. Playiny his second season for Salina, Dorty proved his ability as a ball-run- ner more times than one. George coulal pass, punt, and receive with apparent ease. RAYMOND MILLER-GUARD, SENIOR. Lack of size prevented Ray from ranking as an A1 guard, but his speed a11d aggres- siveness made up for the advantage he lost in weight. When called to back up the line, Ray seldom let a man slip by him. He played his best game in the I-Ierington contest. RICHARD MAGERKURTH-HALFBACK, SENIOR. Given the job of blocking half, IIerky displayed his ability to the utmost quart- ers. Besides being a fine blocker, he was a good tackler and pass-reciever. I-lerky played his best game at Chapman, where he also received a knee injury, wliirh kept him out of several games. HAROLD BRO WN-END, SENIOR. An injury in the Topeka contest caused Harold to miss out on six games. On de- fense Brown was consistently breaking' up plays, whereas on the offense he could catch with ease. PAUL BELL-FULLBACK, SENIOR. Backing up the line was Paul's specialty. He was always in the midst of the battle, ready to do or die for his school. Paul was also a fine passer, punter, and receiver. Bell's best game was against Topeka. PA UL CASSELL-QUARTERBACK, SENIOR. Every night saw Paul on the job, giving his whole-hearted support to the team. Although not a regular, Paul was one of the team's most capable reserves. This was Paul's fourth year on the squad and his first as a letterman. ALBERT HENRY-GUARD, SENIOR. By stellar play in the Ellsworth contest, Henry proved his ability to hold a first string job. Handicapped by being a senior, Albert had difficulty remaining in the starting lineupg but when sent into the fray, he played heads-up ball. JUNIOR PURDY-HALFBACK, JUNIOR. Moving to Salina, in mid-season, from Topeka High Purdy worked his way up to the first string in short order. He passes, punts, and runs with little effort and should be a great asset to the next year's team. JACK CLARK-ATHLETIC MANAGER, JUNIOR. Jack moved from the assistant's job to manager this year and filled the position in fine style. He was always ready to help, and his fine spirit made him well liked by the football players and fans. 1577 Salina 6 Lindsborg 6 A passing attack by Lindsborg in the final quarter downed two hopes of the Maroon eleven. Attempting to go thru the season in the C.K.L. circuit undefeated, the Maroons were disappointed to find the score tied when the final gun went off. They remained un- defeated, but the tie counted one-half loss and one-half win. The single touchdown was made by Yordy on an end run. Salina 6 Emporia 18 Poor teamwork was the cause of Salin.a's second defeat of the season. Starting out with a bang,' the Maroons soon folded up and let the Emporia players slip thru the line past the backs and thru to three touchdowns. The Maroons lone counter came in the second quarter following a 45-yard drive down the Held. The try for extra point vvas not suc- cessful. Salina 26 Chapman 0 Long runs and a short plunge were re- sponsible for the Maroon victory over the Chapman Irish. The playing throughout the game was ragged on the part of both teams. The Maroons rolled up 318 yards from scrim- mage to 50 for the Irish. Salina had 12 first downs and Chapman 5. The first counter came when Boydston slipped thru tackle for 86 yards. Heath followed this with a 50-yard run on a reverse pla,y. Magerkurth contributed the third by dashing around end for 62 yards. Brown made the last tally. Salina 27 Ellsworth 0 Finishing the most successful season they have had in several years, the Maroons downed the Ellsworth Bearcats 27-0. The day was dedicated to the senior boys who played their last footballpgame for S. H. S. Of the eleven men to start the game, eleven were seniors. There were four other seniors who saw service in this game, writing their names in a blaze of glory upon the football annuals of the Salina High School. FOOTBALL SQUAD 1537 - - Z aea+4.,,'fL,g Mt Um not L M MMA BASKETBALL After completing a hit-and-miss basketball and came out on the long end of an 18 to 14 season in which the Maroons won third place score. in the C.K.L. circuit, the Salina cagers jour- neyed to Concordia for the regional tourna- ment. Here the Maroons drew Smith Center first and won that game with little effort. The regulars were withdrawn in the latter part of the game, and the reserves handled the Smith Center crew with almost as much skill az the first five. The final score of the game was 42 to 27. In the semi-finals Salina met Concordia and downed her 33 to 22. The Maroons had played the Cardinal quintet early in the season Meeting Belleville in the finals, the Maroons suffered a defeat at the hands of an under-rated team. Having won the Regional in the previous two or three years, the Maroons were picked as almost sure winners when they reached the finals. Belleville played heads-up ball all the way and, as a result, were regional champions. The score was 28 to 25. Johnny Shaver, star-Maroon forward, was chosen to fill a berth on the All-Tournament team, which included Class A and Class B. Vance Miller, lanky Maroon center, was placed on the Class A All-Stars. Paul played basketball as he did every J thing else, and soon developed into a great defensive guard. His steller play on the court made him one of the most valuable players on Coach Uhrlaub's quintet. JUNIOR PURDY-Forward, Junior. This was Purdy's first year under Maroon colors, but he found it easy rating a first squad position. Although he was kept off the starting lineup dur- ing most of the season, his consistent brand of play proved a big asset to the Maroon cause on many occasions. JOHN SHAVER-Forward, Senior. Playing his second and final year for Salina, Johnny proved to be the most versatile forward in the C. K. L. cir- cuit. He was placed on the C. K. L. all- stars and on the Regional all-tourna- ment team. BOB BAYS-Center, Senior. Bob was a steady, dependable man to use on the defense, although not much of a point-getter. His fighting spirit made him a player Coach Uhrlaub could readily depend upon for relief work. VANCE MILLER-Center, Senior. By his superiority on rebound and tip- oif duties, Miller added many a contest, to the Maroon victory column. ability as a tip-in artist and his con- sistency of play gained him a berth on the all-league second team. ERNEST McDONALD-Guard, Senior. Although unable to connect with the basket at the first of the year, Mc- Donald finally conquered his unsteadi- ness and hit a scoring stride which made him a big factor in many of Salina's contests. Ernie's love of the game was made evident by his style of play. GEORGE BUELL-Forward, Senior. Serving his second year on the Maroon five, Buell did not appear as flashy as he did in his first yearg but he was much more dependable. His teaming with Shaver made one of the finest pair of forwards in the C. K. L JOHN CROWTHERS-Forward, Junior. Crowthers was on the sidelines most of the season and did not have a chance to display his real ability, but he show- ed promise of developing into a valua- ble player. JACK CLARK-Guard, Junior. Jack, the only junior on the starting five, played with remarkable accuracy. his fine passing and defensive work proved valuable to the Maroon machine. KENNETH LeRUE-Manager, Junior. LaRue's services did not rate the spot- light, but they were of much value to the squad, since he worked untiringly in keeping the basketball equipment in shape. C607 91120 TRACK The Maroon cinder-men opened the 1935 track season by journeying to Sterling where they competed and won third place in the Sterling Relays. The tracksters next won a second place in a triangle meet with Herington and Chapman, although Herington won the event. For the third contest of the season the Salinans met Manhattan in a dual affair on the Maroon track and won the meet rather decisively. As in previous years Coach Uhr- laub selected his best men and took them to Lawrence, Kansas, where they entered the K. U. Relays, and won ninth place, the first place- ment Salina had ever made in that event. Because of the fine track that the Salina High School now has, a new meet, called the Central Kansas Invitational, was initiated this year as a permanent part of the track season. Since this is the first year for the C. K. L., the winners of the various events automatically set records. The C. K. L., regional, and state meets were yet to be held, when this story went to press, but from the showings so far the Maroons ought to place high in the first two. ENNHS In tennis this year Pat Adkins of Salina won the singles matches in the C. K. L. Other points were added by the rest of the Maroon net-men, who won the most of their matches this year besides winning the C. K. L. The C. K. L. golf tournament is an event ing the season the golf team won only one of late spring, but from appearances the Maroon golfers will have to improve consider- match and dropped three-to Lindsborg, Man' ably if they rank high in the tournament. I came up here to try to find an antique costume to wear to the masquerade ball tonight. This is the occasion we have been talking about for months. The Women's Civic Center is in charge of the festivities. The president, Winifred Needles, and Florence Campbell, head of committees, have planned the whole event with the help of the Lions Club and Harold Brown. The guest of honor is our dear old mayor, Dick Magerkurth. While I was looking, I found this old Trail which revived so many dear old mem- ories of 1935 that I had to write to you. What on earth are you doing now way over there in Europe? You wrote that Edna Mae Heder- stedt had the lead in 'tFaust this year at Versaizles. I have been dying to hear how she came out. Do you remember Maurice Berrie? He is the professor of the Salina High School now. They have a new building, you know. It was constructed by the Barrett Arshitectual Com- pany owned by Lorraine. Jiack Guazier handles the bu'iness deals for her, and J. Gerth and De- Earl Henry are associates with the company, but James McGee drew up the main plans for the school. The luxurious auditorium is called Miles Hall, a gorgeous full painting of the dedicatee hangs in the foyer. This was the work of Aileen Parker. You should see Dick Cox. The other day I went down town and there Vandella was. She's a sandwich woman ad- vertising her husband's hot dog shop. Yes, Vandella ventured boldly into matrimony with Raymond Lambertson, Whose well-trained deep bass voice has been used for hollering 'fHot dogs! Five cents everybody! Only five cents! This way, folks, for your onion, pickled, nice, spicy, juicy, good hot dogs! In between times Vandella swings the dish rag. You know that Fern Johnson I walked to school with? Well, P'ete's Hair Pins are being advertised over the radio by her. And Sheldon Burr is a salesman down at the Five and Dime on Santa Fe Avenue. But the joke of it is that he's at the girls' jewelry counter, and Woolworth sent him a badge for selling more jewelry than any other salesman at that counter. Oh, how I wish you were here, Carolyn! Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a big family reunion of our old class? If we did, from what far places would we call them: Mildred Todd from her vagabond journeys in Palestine, Helen Smith from her evangelistic work in Hong Kong, Demovia Mobley from Italy where she has been studying music, Vera Nita Crab- tree from Washington D. C., where she serves as the personal secretary to Secretary of War Dern fa relative to the man we used to read aboutjg Marvin Armour and Clinton Young, two successful screen camera men from Cali- fornia, and Lucille Richards and Vance Miller, who are on Broadway making names for them- selves as a team in Love and a Dime . Leslie Evans is still interester in Fords and now owns controlling stock in the Ford cor- ponation . The trial flight of the autoplane invented by Leslie Evans proved a success this afternoon, when its inventor landed it with no apparent difficulty between his garage and his neighbor's. Mr. Evans states that this plane can be made and sold to the public for 3530, and that his plane is so simple to run, even a child will be able to operate it. This will mean a big step forward in our high school transportation system. The football hero hit the line with fierce and mighty thud. He was a large and hairy man endowed with rich red blood. And when they dug him from the ground his ears were full of mud. A score of men had walked on him with hard and heavy heel, and yet he did not heed the hurts that other men would feel, his bones were tough as hickory, his muscles hard as steel. f'He was a wicked sight to see beneath his football suit. There was a shanty on his eye, a gash upon his snootg and all the maidens smiled on him and whispered: 'fAin't he cute! iilllcflliargar btuhin 1Burtra1t5 1475 S.
