Class Council B lt Row: John Rehf uck Ba es. Seniors Recall Eventful Three Years Reading, writing, and arithmetic were ac- complished with numerous honors by the Senior Class of '52 . . . Among the awards during the final year were the gold keys from the Scholastic Art Com- petition presented to PAT RATH and JERALD SLATTUM . . . an Honorable Mention from the Fisher Body Contest won by STEVE LEE . . . Honorable Mentions from the Westing- house Talent Search received by DON PER- LICH and DICK WHITE . . . and the Bausch and Lomb Science Award made also to DICK. Extending their travels, DAVID RHOTEN, DICK MEYER, and DON DAVIS attended the National Conference of Student Councils in Boston, Massachusetts, during summer vacation. Two lirsts at the district speech tournament for each contestant made PAUL WARD and RAY COOK eligible to compete in the Oregon State High School Speech League Tournament. Also eligible with a second in the district was BOB RIGGS . . . RAY COOK was area win- ner in the American Legion Oratorical Contest and participates in the state contest in Portland. DORIS FROHN was the first girl in the Salem High's history to head the P.A. staff . . . and BARBARA RUHL wrote the script, The Shepherds Nosegayf' for the 1952 Jym Jam- boree. Junior Class President was JOHN BONE . . . Vice-President DONNA PHELPS . . . Secretary NAYDEEN TAYLOR . . . Treasurer BEVERLY YOUNG . . . Sergeant-at-Arms BURT HARP . . . Song Leader LUELLA CAR- LISLE . . . Yell Leader LEE ARCHIBALD. DONNA PHELPS, Vice-President, headed the Junior-Senior Prom which carried out the tropical theme A Dreamerls Paradise . . . During the year the class adopted and cared for ELIZA MOROWSKA, a Polish war orphan, now living in England. Bringing home the honors from the speech tournaments were Juniors RAY COOK, JEAN HARTWELL, J O H N B O N E and BOB RIGGS. Leading the bewildered Sophomore Class of 1949-50 were President JIM MATHIESON . . . Vice-President ROBERTA SJODING . . . Treasurer MIKE DEENEY . . . Sergeant-at- Arms GARY JONES . . . Song Leader HEL- EN CALLAGHAN and Yell Leader EDDY BAUER. Sophomore LANNY DIBBERN played his accordian and won the March of Dimes Talent Contest . . . The district American Legion Speech Contest was won by JOHN BONE . . . To LARRY PAULUS and DON McKENZIE, members of the Viking's State Champion Bas- ketball team, were given little gold basketballs. And at the very beginning . . . Sophomores enjoyed the witches and spooks which gave an serie effect at the Halloween Party held in the Gym . . . and preceeding the Salem-Springfield game, a dinner in the school cafeteria.
