eniors Recall Hi h ehool emories At the end of the football season GENE JONES was placed on the Big Six l'First String . . . The bas- ketball Big Six First String claimed LARRY CHAMBERLAIN . . . Wrestling had CLIFFORD HUTCH- INSON State Champ in the 128 pound class and FRANKLIN YELLEN State Champ in the 166 pound class. An interclass rivalry skit Fruit Juice Barl' directed by LEONA STRODE won the seniors second place . . . Following this came the Senior Class Talent Show and a Senior dance, 'Superstition Shufllef, The school year 1949-50 found the Junior class with JIM BOONE as president and NORMA HAMIL- TON as vice-president . . . ELMETTA HANSEN served as secretary and KAY PERRIN treasurer . . . Song leaders were COLLEEN MCNEIL and JOHNNY REX. The big event of the year was the winning of the State Basketball Tournament by the Vikings . . . the Varsity team included juniors LARRY CHAMBERLAIN, WAYNE WALLING, LARRY BAGGETT, and DEB DAVIS. An interclass rivalry skit Mock Wedding', and a Junior Class Talent Show, directed by JANET KUF- NER and MARION PUTMAN, respectively, brought out new acting personalities . . . The speech depart- ment found EUNICE PECKENPAUGH and GILBERT BATSON winning several hrst place trophies in vari- ous oratorical contests . . . and LOUISE MATTER was awarded a Gold Key for a non-objective painting. The Juniors presented several rally dinners with dances after football games, and by custom sponsored the annual Junior-Senior Prom with the theme Song of India . . . the Prom with its well planned, authen- tic decorations proved to be one of Salem High School's most outstanding. STAN LYMAN was elected to lead the struggling Sophomore class for its first year at Salem High . . . Assisting him were JOAN CHANDLER as vice-president and COLLEEN MCNEIL as secretary . . . MAR- GARET MILLER took charge of the financially insecure class as treasurer, and LEADELI. DAVIS and CHARLES EVANS kept spirits up as song leaders . . . For their hrst A.S.B. formal, couples went Dancing on the Moon . . .Also came a Sophomore dance and the first performance of the Jym Jamboree . . . Two sophs proved themselves outstanding as BEVERLY SAYLOR won the coveted Gold Key for her water color and RONALD I-IAMANN showed a state champion calf of its breed at the State Fair. Jim Kleen Presitles Uver Class of 1951 Besides accomplishing much in their studies and winning outstanding honors, members of the Class of '51 are seasoned travelers . . . This year KENNETH KEPPINGER and STEPHEN ZIELINSKI attended the E.E.A. National Convention at Kansas City . . . BOB CARLSON, GEORGE DURHAM, JERRY GIL- LESPIE, BOB HEWITT, BILL MCKINNEY, GARY MESSING, TERRY SHOWALTER, BOB STRAY- ER, and GEORGE STROZUT traveled to Valley Forge for the Boy Scout Jamboree . . . and DAVID BLACKMER represented SHS in Chicago for the National Scholastic Press Association Convention. Many honors have been awarded . . . In Meier and Frank Scholastic Art Competition, a sculpture and a woven mat won Gold Keys for LORETTA ROWE and LOYAL HOWARD, respectively . . . After DON STACKHOUSE won the Bausch and Lomb Science Award, he also received Honorable Mention in the West- inghouse sponsored National Science Talent Search . . . The annual D.A.R. Good Citizen Award was voted by the class to JUDI WOOD . . . MARION PUTMAN and GILBERT BATESON brought home the first place cup in senior debate at the Wfillamette University Speeeh Tournament . . . and the first senior to re- ceive a scholarship was ROSEMARY RONWIELL who won one from the University of Idaho . . . second senior was BOB LUTHER who was the recipient of a scholarship from Whitman College.
