Library By use of the library students move toward independence in learning. Instruc- tion in the use of the card catalogue, the Reader's Guide and reference books is given each student at the opening of school as an important step toward self- direction in learning. Many courses encourage use of the wide range of books and reference ma- terial supplied by the library rather than a single textbook. The library contains nine thousand books, and seventy-five magazines are subscribed to regularly. Three daily nevvspapers are also on the subscription list. Students are making good use of Salem High's library. Isabel Goodnough Librarian Music Classes Give Opportunity for Group Participation In the new music room A Choir is practicing under Mr. MiIIer's direction. The music department offers instruction to students planning to become professional musi- cians and to those who desire to participate in music for enjoyment. Mr. Miller is Salem High's new choral music director. Before coming to Salem, Mr. Miller taught music at Newberg, Oregon. Climax to the year's study for both choral and instrumental groups is participation in dis- trict and state contests. Students receive class credit for daily attend- ance in band, orchestra, choir, glee and general music. Page 16 E. Donald Jessop Howard F. Miller Victor B, Palmas: Band Choral Music Orchestra
