Edmundson Elizabeth Hogg Delores Hultman Martha Pinson LaRue Richards Head of Commercial Bookkeeping Shorthand Typing Shorthand Typing Department Typing TYPlf19 Bookkeeping Bookkeeping Practical training that enables a student to prepare during high school for a career in business is offered by the commercial department. ln addition to the three-year business course, there is also personal typing, which is one semesters instruction in typing for the student's personal use. Other courses are both Gregg and Thomas shorthand, bookkeeping, business principles and office training. Each year approximately six hundred titty students use the departments one hundred twenty-five typevvriters. Page 13

Three Science Subjects Train in Accurate Observation All courses in science give the student training in careful observation, open mindedness in testing and clear thinking in experimenting. Biology is required tor all sophomores. This science of living things teaches basic principles that promote good health and living. Reference is made to human biology and basic scientific principles are stressed. Chemistry emphasizes accuracy ot observation and the formation ot the habit ot inductive reasoning. Work in the varieties ot matter and on chemical change lead to experimentation in the laboratory, Physics teaches basic lavvs of energy which are used in experimenting with such things as electricity, sound and light. Students planning on engineering careers elect the physics course, which is a senior subiect. In this course students learn the fundamentals of writing script and using sound effects. Their programs are broadcast on a regular schedule over the two Salem radio stations. Seniors have a wide variety ot one-se- mester courses from which to choose. Equiv- alent in credit to senior composition are journalism and creative writing. Second se- mester electives are senior literature, drama, public speaking, and debate. These courses provide voice training and opportunity for expression.
